Representing the clinical state of the art in culturally competent assessment and treatment, and providing important information on the four main racial/ethnic minority groups (African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos/Hispanics, and Native Americans and Alaska Natives), the Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry synthesizes the collected wisdom from the editor’s 10 years of teaching cultural psychiatry as a CME course with the professional experience of seven other contributors in using and teaching about DSM-IV’s Outline for Cultural Formulation.
Following an initial chapter about how the influence of culture affects every level of the mental health system, and how clinicians can gain insight into the complex interplay between culture and mental illness to ultimately improve patient care, six subsequent chapters by 8 authors use numerous illustrations and clinical vignettes as they address
Clinicians must now meet accreditation standards involving cultural competence, making this groundbreaking clinical manual, with its three appendixes and index, indispensable for mental health care educators, students, residents, and practitioners. The Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry will also prove invaluable for encouraging much-needed research, as we seek to better understand our increasingly diverse—and ever smaller—world.
“[ “Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry”] is a well organized, easy to read, interesting, and thoughtful clinical manual that succinctly addresses diagnostic, clinical, and treatment of minority groups in the U.S. It is a culturally sensitive examination of the differences and sameness that bind and define cultural groups that can be used as a practical guide in everyday practice and as a teaching tool. Any clinician practicing in the U.S. will find it a relevant, current, and necessary read considering the rapid growth of minority populations and the subsequent variety of complex cultural variables that are necessary to understand and incorporate into diagnosis and treatment.”– “Doody’s Book Review Service”, “September 29, 2006”
A very comprehensive review on cultural psychiatry. Covers overview, psychopharm, major ethnic groups, and a great section on cultural formulation. I am using this book to teach the child psychiatry fellows. Also recommended the book to a training director friend who will also use it for her course. The chapters are not very long so it’s very readable in small chunks. Every paragraph is packed with useful clinical information, based on published data. I am very impressed with the amounth of research Dr. Lim cramed into this book. Highly recommended.
