Description

This high-yield, illustrated clinical neurophysiology board review is a comprehensive resource for assessing and refining the knowledge tested on multiple board examinations. Written by authors who are collectively board certified in all of the areas covered, the book is a valuable study tool for candidates preparing for certification or recertification in clinical neurophysiology, neuromuscular medicine, epilepsy, sleep medicine, and neurology. Using structured question formats typically encountered on boards, this comprehensive review allows users to assess their knowledge in a wide range of topics, provides rationales for correct answers, and explains why the other choices are incorrect. A unique “Pearls” section at the end of the book allows for quick review of the most important concepts prior to exam day.

Clinical Neurophysiology Board Review Q&A contains 801 questions with answers and detailed explanations. The book is divided into eight chapters covering anatomy and physiology, electronics and instrumentation, nerve conduction studies and EMG, EEG, evoked potentials and intraoperative monitoring, sleep studies, ethics and safety, and advanced topics including QEEG, MEG, TES, autonomic testing, and more. Liberal use of image-based questions illustrating the full spectrum of neurophysiologic tests and findings build interpretive skills. Questions are randomized and include both case-related questions in series and stand-alone items to familiarize candidates with the question types and formats they will find on the exam.

User’s Reviews

“The book is well written, well organized according to subspecialties, easy to read, and the explanations are explicit… This is a well written review text with extensive coverage of the topics in clinical neurophysiology. It should be a great board preparation study book for residents and fellows. Obviously, it is also very useful for practicing neurologists like me who intend to sharpen their clinical neurophysiology skills.” –Simeon Zou, MD, The Neurodiagnostic Journal

I really wanted to like this book. I needed a good review for the Clinical Neurophysiology Maintenance of Certification exam, and this looked like the ticket. Unfortunately it is not. The questions are very poorly worded and in many cases the answers are simply wrong. Unlike the better review books, the authors do not provide clear explanatory diagrams or references. To be honest, I have only made it through part of the first chapter, and others may be better, but I am so put off by the inaccuracies that I am doubtful that I will spend much more time with it. I suppose this could be a good review if you have enough background knowledge to suspect the incorrect answers and go back to original texts to check, as I did in a few cases, but I really don’t have time for that. This book will require major revision if future editions are to be of any value.
