The goal of this guide is not primarily to help with visual identification of diagnoses, but rather to help young dermatologists learn to create differential diagnoses and learn all the important facts for myriad diseases. Given its unique approach, this guide will serve new residents well in quickly adapting to a new field, and also, it will serve senior residents as quick review of all topics in preparation for in service and board examinations. In general, there are very few dermatology board review books of any kind and therefore this book will immediately have a market among dermatology students, residents, rotators, and faculty.

“This text is a compilation of many wonderful pearls and mnemonics. As the back cover states, the text “is derived from the author’s notes taken during dermatology residency”– the author clearly took great notes. While the book is geared toward residents, it would benefit medical students, early career dermatologists, and dermatologists preparing for their maintenance of certification; it also conveniently fits into a white coat pocket.

The book is divided into 4 parts. Part I is a “starter kit”–a summary of important clinical and histologic terms, targeting primarily first-year residents (eg, “Approaching histopathologic description”). Part II, the largest section, contains “Medical dermatology outlines” — these are nicely organized by disease category (eg, papulosquamous, vascular, neoplastic, alopecia, etc). Within each category area few testable and important points about each disease, in addition to helpful clinical pearls and memorable mnemonics. Part III is an impressive collection of lists, differential diagnoses (eg, painful tumors), and more mnemonics–my favorite is the section on “Commonly confused diseases” (those of us dealing with residents/students still gleaning dermatology’s complex lexicon will understand the value of this section). Part IV is a potpourri of high yield topics not discussed elsewhere (eg, medications, procedural dermatology, and basic science [I particularly liked the concise discussion of molecular pathways important in dermatology]); this section also contains several nice figures, presented in color.”
