Description

Learning medical professionalism is a challenging, evolving, and life-long endeavor. Professionalism in Medicine: A Case-Based Guide for Medical Students helps begin this process by engaging students and their teachers in reflection on cases that resonate with the experiences of life in medicine. Through the book’s seventy-two cases, commentaries, videos, and literature-based reviews, students explore the many challenging areas of medical professionalism. Readers will appreciate the provocative professionalism dilemmas encountered by students from the pre-clinical years and clinical rotations and by physicians of various specialties. Each case is followed by two commentaries by writers who are involved in health care decisions related to that case, and who represent a wide variety of perspectives. Authors represent 46 medical schools and other institutions and include physicians, medical students, medical ethicists, lawyers, psychologists, nurses, social workers, pharmacists, health care administrators, and patient advocates.

This book helps the instruction of professionalism by engaging medical students and faculty in cases that resonate with real-life experiences. Each of the seventy-two cases is followed by two commentaries written by physicians, medical students, and/or contributors from various health care disciplines that discuss dilemmas encountered by students from all years of medical school, and by physicians of various specialties.

User’s Reviews

“Current medical education-in which integrity is easily professed yet rarely examined and empathy withers across the arc of medical training-is contrasted with the possibility of training physicians to be trustworthy stewards for patients and the public. Directed to medical students and their educators for progressive development across all medical school years, this ambitious resource supports this nearly unimaginable transformation with scholarly analysis while remaining accessible to professional and lay audiences interested in medical education, professionalism, and health care reform.” – JAMA (2011), Y.S. Bradshaw, DO, MS, Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, USA

A brief overview of the text suggests that I will be able to apply the material to student and resident teaching. In particular, I intend to use the text and numerous case stories to help learners sharpen their sensitivity to the ethical dimensions of every-day patient care and their ethical reasoning skills.
