Description

Sexuality is an integral part of gender identity, self-image, and overall well-being. Sexual problems have a high prevalence in the general population and also among patients with mental disorders. Clinical Manual of Sexual Disorders is the first comprehensive text in decades to address the management and treatment of sexual dysfunctions. Using a conceptual model that incorporates biological, psychological, and cultural interventions as its guiding principle, the book explores and evaluates the many facets of sexual dysfunction. Written by 25 contributing clinical specialists from around the world, the text combines conceptual shifts within the field of human sexuality with the latest research findings into a practical three-part volume. The book covers general areas of human sexuality within the frame of psychiatry, management of major sexual dysfunctions in conjunction with certain psychiatric conditions and medications, and sexual issues in two unique patient populations children and adolescents, and older adults.

User’s Reviews

For those who have let the sex lives of their patients slide out of focus in clinical psychiatry, this masterful work beautifully sharpens the picture. Written by a group of experienced clinicians and researchers, this excellent book provides a rich body of practical information for anyone willing to address the sexual lives of patients. The emphasis on assessment and treatment is ideal for the practicing clinician. The book is comprehensive, while being readily accessible. This is a fine synthesis and contribution to the literature. Anyone reading it will gain insights that will benefit their patients. –Lawrence A. Labbate, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

This authoritative, readable and clinically useful manual of sexual disorders has long been needed. It is comprehensive both in scope and depth. The book is exactly what clinicians, whether psychiatrists, or gynecologists or primary care physicians, need for addressing a neglected aspect of medical practice. –Giovanni A. Fava, MD., Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy; Editor in Chief, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, State University of New York at Buffalo

As a psychiatry resident, I found this book extremely helpful as the authors have successfully consolidated a great deal of information in a single, concise, and clinically oriented text which presents the necessary information and practical tools to better provide treatment of patients with sexual disorders. Before I got this book, I had accumulated a scattering of articles from various other texts and journals that were helpful, but not as complete or concise as this book. –Aaron Plattner, MD, Doody Enterprises, Inc.
