I could have used this book a year ago when I was having very bad indigestion that lasted a very long time. Ultimately, my diagnosis was a slow emptying stomach, and I was put on small meals with little fiber and low fat. I still had a lot of issues due to OTC painkillers I took for back pain, knee pain and what turned out to be an infected wisdom tooth. Ultimately, that ended up with me in the hospital in ICU for 3 days and 5 days total with anemia and a very low blood count. The cause was several bleeding fissures in the stomach, had I this book then I may have been able to head it off before I had to call an ambulance (which are expensive, even with insurance).

I like the book breakdown of common digestive tract ailments from the definition to the details to the complications and ultimately to the treatments. The book is apparently a teaching text, it has questions at the end of sections and includes the answers. There are many black and white and full color photos in the book to show what the various conditions might look like to a doctor. Of course you can’t really use that as a self diagnosis, but the descriptions are detailed enough you can make a good guess without the pictures and at least be helpful with your doctor. I’ve had a lot of expensive tests that were a waste of time, because I did not control my own narrative with the doctor. Today I write lists of questions on every visit If I’m going to pay for something, I might as well get as many answers as I can for piece of mind.

One of the best features is this is easy to read and understand. My late father used to have medical books around the house and I’d read the dry text in the Merck or other disease or ailment books. It was hard to make heads or tails with all the medical jargon and little or no illustrations. I pity doctors who had to come up that way and digest those kind of difficult books. This book while not for people without some understanding of medical terms and jargon is easy enough for someone with a decent general education to read. Recommended, as your home health guide to stomach and digestive issues. Gives you the ammo to talk to your doctor intelligently and let them give you the best diagnosis.

This is a book on g.e. at a very basic level geared for entry level nursing staff. The section on gallstones (perhaps the most common ailment) is very superficial and has the bottom line of surgical removal of the gallbladder.

If this level suits your needs, the typeface is excellent and very easy to read. The pictures and drawings or good. The book is just at a very entry level.
