Description

This book discusses all aspects of skull base surgery, from a neurosurgical point of view. The therapeutic options in the treatment of skull base lesions are explained and a systematic overview of relevant diseases is included.

A strong emphasis is placed on practical aspects of skull base surgery: classic surgical approaches and also methods where there has been rapid recent development, such as stereotactic radiation therapy and interventional neuroradiology. Several international specialists systematically describe the treatment of traumatic lesions, tumors, vascular lesions, and developmental anomalies.

User’s Reviews

β€œThe purpose is to discuss the therapeutic concepts and treatment strategies of skull base pathology from the perspective of a neurosurgeon, with appropriate cross-referencing to the interdisciplinary specialties. These worthy objectives are met by constantly presenting a multidisciplinary treatment perspective with an emphasis on the team and specialty approach. The audience is neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, neurologists, and radiologists.” (Gregory D. Arnone, Doody’s Book Reviews, February, 2018)

This is a guide, comprehensive text, and atlas of Skull Base Surgery from an internationally recognized group of experts in Neurosurgery from Germany, Japan, and European sources. The trauma, oncology, vascular, and congenital pathologies and their microsurgical treatments are covered in detail. Intraoperative photos, schematic drawings, MRI, CT, 3D angiography, and computer rendered images help the authors in a very useful guide for residents, fellows, and neurosurgeons. The surgical approaches include transsphenoidal, transmastoid, retrosigmoid, suboccipital, retrolabyrinthine, petrousal, subfrontal, etc. are diagrammed with a step by step guide to complex pathologies. EC IC bypass, vascular decompressions, IC-IC, STA-MCA, and saphenous intracranial grafting are all illustrated well. Giant aneurysms, DAV malformations, carotid cavernous fistulae, and giant arterial venous malformations are covered including operative techniques. Kawase’s, Parkinson’s, Mullan’s, Fukushima’s, Yarsargil’s, Spetzger’s etc. triangles are illustrated. The instrumentation including clips, micro scissors, retractors, probes, multi clips, etc are pictured along with their usage intraoperatively. The future of skull base surgery including imaging, virtual reality, and robotic surgery are covered in the final chapter of the book by these well known editors/authors. The role of Cyberknife and radio surgical approaches is explained for the future of the field.
