I bought this book to read for my board recertification exam. It is a well written book, easy to read, it tackles tough subjects smoothly without going into confusing details. It covers all the topics that potentially come up in a critical care unit be it medical or surgical. There are however few mistakes here and there about medication dosages or proper units used to describe, for example, endotracheal tube sizes. I contacted the publishing company about one of those mistakes, and they were gracious to write me back thanking me and they took steps to correct these errors. overall very good book on the subject matter and very easy to read.

Coverage is broad, encompassing adult medical, neurological, post-operative, and post-trauma care, and the palliative and terminal care of patients who die of a critical illness.

The editors are seasoned and highly respected clinicians at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This university teaching hospital and level1 trauma center serves urban patients admitted through a busy Emergency Department and a full spectrum of tertiary-care referral patients, including those who are hospitalized for treatment of cancer or rare diseases, for complications of transplantation. Most of the authors are academic clinicians who have succeeded in their chapters in tempering evidence-based knowledge with pragmatic lessons learned at the bedside.

This book assumes ready access to the full spectrum of resources that are available in well-equipped, larger acute care hospitals. For that reason, the Lanken Manual may not be ideal for use in resource-limited settings where improvisation is paramount.

I recommend this book highly for quick reference and learning by intensivists, hospitalists, graduate medical trainees, and critical care nurses, The book is also well suited to those who are preparing for standardized examinations.
