Having recently finished my psychiatry placement on the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit at my base hospital, I can confirm the helpfulness of this book when studying clinical psychiatry. The text provides more than enough detail whilst remaining succinct enough throughout to cover a lot of information.
The title is essentially arranged into three parts. The first five chapters offer an introduction into psychiatry (including its assessment and diagnosis, treatment and the Mental Health Act). Chapters six to seventeen deal with symptoms which a patient may present with (which are particularly useful in providing differential diagnoses when revising for OSCEs!) The remaining chapters look at specific mental illnesses and disorders in more detail, helpfully cross-referencing relevant chapters where necessary.
More could be done to point out the differences between these two sorts of chapters (e.g. `The patient with low mood’ and `The mood (affective) disorders’ as sometimes the reader is left unsure in which chapter to look in to find the information they are after.
At the end of the book are a multitude of multiple choice questions, which definitely add value to this title.
The text is arranged in an easy-to-read manner and makes good use of tables and figures throughout. Both the case summaries and `hints and tips’ boxes are helpful in painting a realistic picture of psychiatry. Objectives for each chapter are outlined at the start so the reader knows exactly what to expect from reading the chapter.

Good book. Psychiatry can be a bit of a burden and this book makes it more bearable
