For nearly 25 years, medical students and faculty alike have chosen Essentials of General Surgery and its companion textbook, Essentials of Surgical Specialties, for authoritative coverage of surgical information that every physician in training should know. The Fifth Edition incorporates current research from the field; new sample questions, answers, and rationales; and new tables and algorithms. A new art program presents concepts and images—including an Appendix with 50 burn images—in full color for optimal learning and retention.

With its overview of anatomy, physiology, and coverage of pertinent complications for each case, the text prepares students for the NBME shelf exam for surgery, as well as residency training

The authors—all of whom are practicing surgeons—carefully manage the depth and breadth of content so that each section can be reasonably read and thoroughly understood by third- and fourth-year students

User’s Review:

Great overview for those that prefer to learn from textbooks. You will still need to use other resources for the surgery shelf, but it does a good job of giving a broad overview of important topics. Not too long either.

This is a very thorough book, and has a lot of interesting material in it. Our clerkship director made this book mandatory for the clerkship and he expected us to get through it in our 12 weeks on Surgery, but he has to be insane. I tried reading this book before I discovered Pestana…it is so dense and so full of completely low yield unimportant details for the THIRD YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT. I am only basing this review on what I think this book has to offer for the third years out there. This is the only reason I am giving this book 4 stars. It is a good book, but please do yourself a favor and just get Pestana if you are a medical student. I do not want to go into surgery, so this might also be influencing my review, so please be aware. Of the first 4 chapters that I did manage to read during my SICU rotation, I did learn some important details, but in that time I could have learned so much more clinically important material by reading Pestana…
