Description

The Oxford American Handbook of Clinical Examination and Practical Skills is a comprehensive pocket guide for medical, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students. It is designed to help students transition from classroom to clinical internships, preceptorships, and clerkships. Providing clear and user-friendly guidance on all aspects of history taking, physical examination, common practical procedures, data interpretation and communication skills, it gives realistic advice on coping with and mastering common situations.

Each systems chapter follows a structured format covering applied anatomy, history, examination, and the presentation of common and important disorders. The procedures section includes approximately forty practical procedures that the final year medical student and senior nurse are expected to perform. The section on data interpretation covers the basics of chest x-rays, abdominal x-rays, ECGs, lung function tests and several other areas that the student is expected to carry out in their early years of training.

User’s Reviews

“The organization by organ system, the pertinent historical cues practitioners should be looking for, and the complete description of physical findings supported by the excellent graphics makes this one of the best books on physical examination available. I highly recommend it to medical educators, medical students, residents, and attendings. There is much to be learned at all levels from this well-organized, well-written book.” — Doody’s

This book has the basic overview of what to look for during a general examination. I aspire to be an NP one day, yet I am quite intimidated with the ability recall so much information and practice at the level of my own provider – he is so detailed about many, many things while at the same time, relating to the patient. I’m afraid of making a mistake or overlooking something. This book really puts together the art and science of being a professional healthcare provider and how to do a general clinical exam. I am just starting nursing school, and I’ve already begun to incorporate some of the things in here, such as “wearing my hair up,” “saying ‘Good Afternoon’ instead of ‘hello'”, and being fine with myself if I touch a patient appropriately such as with a handshake or a touch on the shoulder. Learning professional boundaries and practicing a professional image before nursing school has helped me with my pre-nursing school jitters. I feel more in control and confident. Out of sheer curiosity, I purchased this book and I’m so glad I did. It has given me insight into what it would be like to be an NP one day and gives me hope that yes, I could do this if I keep studying hard and using this book as my guide and inspiration.
