Description

With more surgical patients requiring special perioperative care in an intensive care unit (ICU), there is an increased demand for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) who are equipped to care for them. However, APPs such as Physician Assistants (PAs) or Nurse Practitioners (NPs) have limited specialized training and exposure to the unique needs of the perioperative critically-ill population. That’s where this book can help. Concepts in Surgical Critical Care is an indispensable resource for the APP, non-surgical intensivist, or non-intensivist surgeon who regularly provides critical care for surgical patients. It features a user-friendly organization designed for quick reference while at the bedside of patients or in an office. It starts with foundational critical care topics across all surgical specialties and is followed by the specifics, including gastrointestinal surgery, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, obstetrics, and more. Concepts in Surgical Critical Care is a unique resource written by APPs to help APPs provide superior care for their perioperative critically-ill patients.

Bryan Boling is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the Division of Critical Care Medicine with the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Kentucky. He has over 15 years of experience in healthcare, focusing on emergency and critical care. In addition to his clinical practice in the Neuroscience ICU, Cardiothoracic ICU, and Surgical ICU, Dr. Boling is the author of a number of published journal articles and textbook chapters and has spoken at national and international conferences. He is currently the Contributing Editor for Neurocritical Care for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) journal Critical Care Nurse. He has served as an item writer for the AACN Cardiac Surgery Certification exam and is on the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Fundamentals of Critical Care Support course development committee. He is actively involved with the education of nurse practitioner students and nurse practitioner critical care fellows.

User’s Reviews

Very well done and filling an important niche. Good for new APPs, residents, and similar roles in the ICU.
