Description

Principles of Physiology for the Anaesthetist, now in its Third Edition, continues to provide candidates with a “tailor-made” alternative to more general physiology textbooks and delivers information designed and written specifically with the trainee anaesthetist in mind.

The book covers the physiology of all major organ systems, with specific emphasis on the nervous, respiratory, and cardiovascular systems. In addition, special sections on the physiology of pain, the physiology of ageing, and the physiological effects of specific environments—all highly relevant to anaesthetic practice—have been incorporated.

The third edition builds upon several new features introduced in the last edition: learning objectives, areas for reflection, and a handy summary of physiological equations and tables. Copious diagrams throughout support the text and aid in the understanding of difficult concepts.

The authors integrate their teaching experience in physiology into the content to improve the understanding of the fundamentals of human physiology in relation to the work of the anaesthetist. This book will remain an invaluable reference throughout anaesthetic training and beyond, as well as a useful revision aid.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ This book is excellent for what it is – an overview of physiology for
anaesthetic trainees.I found it to be an excellent resource in studying for
the primary exam. It is to be expected that core topics, such as
cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, are not covered to the level of
detail required for the exam. For these topics, it’s a decent introduction
but you definitely need to use other sources, e.g. West’s Respiratory Physiology: The Essentials . For more peripheral topics with a lesser level of expected knowledge,
such as immunology, it has as much detail as you should be required to
know. This saves you from either getting a separate physiology book for
every body system or from using a weighty tome like Guyton and Hall Textbook of Medical Physiology, 13e (Guyton Physiology) , which is a great reference but is awkward to carry around with you and
covers many topics in far more detail than you need for the primary
exam.Highly recommended. Read it fairly early in your study to get a good
overview of topics. This will prepare you well for more in-depth texts and
help you answer questions and understand inter-relations between
systems.(One star docked because some of the diagrams are presented in a
confusingly different manner to almost every other text.)
