Description

This text addresses the need for a book specifically aimed at obstetric anesthesia and covers topics such as pulmonary, cardiac renal, hepatic, hematologic, neurologic, endocrine and other diseases. The real anesthetic challenge arises when patients present to Labor and Delivery with unusual or complicated medical problems and, in recent years, a few of the larger institutions have developed an Obstetric Anesthesiology Consultation Service to prepare for the management of these patients. While most pregnant women who present to Labor and Delivery require anesthetic intervention, they typically meet the anesthesiologist for the first time in labor. Since the majority of laboring women are healthy without significant comorbidities, this does not present much of a challenge to the anesthesiologist and the anesthetic management tends to be straight-forward with favorable outcomes. However, using this new model, the anesthesiologist has the opportunity to discuss the various treatment modalities and potentially suggest diagnostic testing to be performed prior to delivery, similar to the pre-operative testing that is done in other surgical environments.

User’s Reviews

Review “This is a book full of obscure, rare, or uncommon diseases found in pregnancy … . This makes this book useful to the anesthesiologist who really wants to understand the disease process related to pregnancy, especially one who is working in an obstetric unit and handles special or difficult cases. … This is a book that finds its place in obstetric units and in the anesthesiology library.” (Edson Chikumba, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Vol. 129 (6), December, 2019)

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ This is not a textbook that goes into great detail on general maternal/obstetric physiology and anesthesia concerns. For that you should read Chestnut. This book is for when you’re in a busy practice and that patient with the notable disorder that maybe you haven’t seen in a few years shows up and you need a quick refresher on what to expect and what you need to consider in your anesthetic plan. It’s well organized (diseases listed alphabetically is very convenient), easy to read, and to the point. Great to keep on your tablet/phone as a handy reference guide.

⭐ I love the alphabetical format of this book. The illustrations and content are a MUST look at for all who care for pregnant women. The contributors are experts in the field and their guidance is invaluable!

⭐ This is a great desk reference for anyone who practices anesthesiology and sees obstetrical patients. With more than 180 chapters, it covers everything you are likely to see with colorful Illustrations and well-written text

⭐ Great book to read while in fellowship or as an OB anesthesiologist in a smaller hospital that doesn’t see high risk patients often, but needs to be prepared. Very diverse group of cases that covers every possible scenario in OB Anesthesia. Good reference guide.

⭐ Much needed up-to-date reference text for high-risk obstetric patients. The alphabetical organization of the book, especially, makes it a breeze to navigate; this is already one of my go-to books in my practice!

⭐ Excellent–succinct, very relevant to current obstetric anesthesia practice. Wonderful resource for helping with management of sick pregnant patients!
