Description

Cytokine Storm Syndromes, including HLH and MAS, are frequently fatal disorders, particularly if not recognized early and treated during presentation. The genetics of Cytokine Storm Syndromes are being defined with many of the risk alleles giving rise to mutations in the perforin-mediated cytolytic pathway used by CD8 cytotoxic T cells and natural killer cells. These are being studied using murine models. Up to 10% of the general population may carry risk alleles for developing Cytokine Storm Syndromes, and Cytokine Storm Syndromes are being increasingly recognized around the world in pediatric and adult hospitals.

A variety of infectious, rheumatic, and oncologic triggers are commonly associated with Cytokine Storm Syndromes, but understanding this disorder is critical for all researchers and physicians to ensure timely and appropriate therapy. This textbook, the first of its kind, addresses all aspects of the disorder – from genetics, pathophysiology, and ongoing research, to clinical presentations, risk factors, and treatment.

⭐ Disclaimer: I know Dr. Randy Cron personally and academically-professionally. That pre-bias said, this is an excellent compilation offering the most up to date information on a strange medical condition called “cytokine storm.” As a collection of academic chapters with world-reknown researchers contributing their expertise, there is some difference in style in different chapters. That said, I think Dr. Cron and his co-editor Dr. Behrens did a terrific job of distilling the exciting world of immunology as it relates to clinical practice and presenting it in a factual and meaningful way. For clinicians and academicians, this volume is particularly useful now as we seek solutions to the cytokine storm associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

⭐ I bought this book to aid me in my research to find a treatment for COVID-19, and this book is invaluable.COVID-19 does not directly cause respiratory failure (Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome) and death on its own. Rather, in about 10% of the population that are genetically predisposed, or are environmentally sensitized, the COVID-19 virus causes the cytokine cascade to enter into a positive feedback mode, whereby the entire immune system gets mobilized and attacks the body’s organs. The blood vessels lining the lungs are the first to go in this super-autoimmune attack. This book saved me months of work, because it identified the key cytokines involved in the feedback mechanism of the cytokine cascade leading to cytokine storm, so that I could successfully use existing safe medications to deal with the problem to ensure that a COVID-19 infection does not progress beyond the patient feeling “lousy and lethargic” for a couple of weeks.I believe that the editors covered everything that is currently known about CK storm, and any investigator or clinician should pick up a copy of this book. BTW Amazon’s price is lower than getting it from the publisher. The only thing that was a problem was the month’s wait to shop this book at the height of the epidemic.

⭐ An excellent synopsis of cytokine storm syndromes, written before the coronavirus pandemic (as a result of which I would expect a revised version). My only criticism – common to medical textbooks – is the exorbitant cost, which may put it beyond the reach of individual clinicians, but all acute hospitals should have a copy.
