Description

Drawing on the latest neuroscience research, this visual guide makes the hidden workings of the human brain simple to understand. How the Brain Works begins with an introduction to the brain’s anatomy, showing you how to tell your motor cortex from your mirror neurons. Moving on to function, it explains how the brain works constantly and unnoticed to regulate heartbeat and breathing, and how it collects information to produce the experiences of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. The chapters that follow cover memory and learning, consciousness and personality, and emotions and communication.

There’s also a guide to the brain’s disorders, including physical problems, such as tumors and strokes, and psychological and functional disorders, ranging from autism to schizophrenia. Illustrated with bold graphics and step-by-step artworks, and sprinkled with bite-sized factoids and question-and-answer features, this is the perfect introduction to the fascinating world of the human brain.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ Because a good portion of this book is text over images and because the kindle only displays black, white and shades of gray, when displayed on a kindle device, much of the book is gray text on gray images. It is very hard if not impossible to see the text. The book is okay when displayed in the kindle app on an iPad because the black text appears over the pink, green, blue and yellow images and is therefore legible. This book is a broad but not very deep look at the brain. The book has two and only two pages on each topic. Learning a language gets two pages. How memories are formed gets two pages. Alzheimer’s gets two pages. The networks of brain cells gets two pages. Artificial intelligence gets two pages.I would say that this book covers very little of how the brain works. This book is like something Time-Life would produce.

⭐ Lots of interesting information. This is a subject that the general public knows little about. Many billions of neurons(nerve cells) sending messages and instructions from our brains. Sent by electrical and chemical means on to other neurons and on and on. And then neurons in the heart and gut not only react to those messages but are also capable of returning some information back to the brain. It cant be explained how this all developed and probably we will never know. Our brains have developed to the point that we can reason and plan and understand complexity. We do know that not only is life subject to change…but invites change. Change is a requirement in all life. That is all we know now. I would like to know more, but no one knows those answers. All we can do is refine and study the information that is available. Who knows what the human brain will be capable of in 1000 years…or a million years. I suspect that the brain will be very different. I read through this book and as time allows I will try to study it in greater detail. My brain tells me that I should do that. The human brain is the most complex thing on this earth.

⭐ Such a great book. Love the illustrations, and as a psychology student, I think is great to know the basic information of how our brain works

⭐ Thank You – everything A+

⭐ Each set of pages opens (with very helpful colorful graphics) to describe the brain and SO MANY facets and concepts spectacularly. It describes carefully and with near perfect brevity, the endless functions and majesty of our magnificent personal command centers. I can’t put it down so it is helpful to grab it when you have time. Or if one wishes one could study a concept or two daily over a period of a month or a year and walk away feeling like you know more than 98% of the planet about the brain. And you likely would.I have learned over many years that GREAT books are even greater when I slow down. Study carefully each paragraph even each sentence. I ALWAYS find myself saying (to me) this is ultra clear. Little aha moments abound. NOTE: I have been studying the brain and the neurotransmitters etc. etc. for about three or four years purely out of my desire to learn about our magnificent piece of equipment above our shoulders. So this was not completely brand new and I was ready for it. But if someone has never studied the brain and neurons and neurotransmitters and brain mechanisms and circuits it will take a bit more time. If someone studies this very carefully that will be a joy if you are deeply interested the brain etc the book would help someone walk into a medical school and do very well I would bet on a preliminary exam at least, maybe even more than preliminary. OK I’m done I’ve got to get back to it. Thrilled with it ! I didn’t perfectly proofread this so forgive errors etc. GC.

⭐ all the DK books are great. They include photos, illustrations, and sidebars to help with understanding and concise explanations. Not heavy reading but enjoyable.

⭐ I used this book to help me on my MSc Psychology course for an exam I had on Biological Psychology. This subject was new to me and this booked helped to make things very clear! i certainly found some answers to the exam in the book!

⭐ Page 14 , I quote ‘ human and animal brains ‘ . What are we if not animals ? It would be appropriate for the information to be correct .

⭐ Thanks very much

⭐ Easy to read and understand.
