⭐ I recently bought this book. The first edition was one of my favorite books because it is so easy to read and so well illustrated. I was prepared not to like the second edition because I like the first one so well. Having read both, I find that I like the second edition even better than the first. It addresses some problems not addressed in the first book and is more encyclopedic. I have had a few books in my lifetime that opened new doors for me. I had tried for years to learn something about the alopecias. This book came along, I read it, and voila, I was in the game. From my perspective, Dr Sperling is an unsung hero for making the information known to Dr. Headington and a few others available to the masses, a Prometheus of alopecia pathology. wll ⭐ This is the second edition of this text. Dr. Sperling is joined by two worthy teammates, Dr. Shawn Cowper and Dr. Eleanor Knopp. There new chapters which discuss psoriatic alopecia, and chemotherapy-induced alopecia, and much much more. The best addition is the photographic explosion. There are numerous great photographs demonstrating the features of each alopecia. If you want to learn to interpret horizontal section hair pathology, you have to get this book. My next suggestion is that whenever the courses are offered, you take Dr. Sperling’s alopecia courses at the American Society of Dermatopathology meeting. You have to sign up early because the course fills up extremely quickly. Both the book and the courses are great investments. ⭐ Well done. Nice updated chapter on psoriasis related alopecia that was not present in previous edition. Good summary of many entities although still need to go to original journal source material for more information on specific topics. ⭐ Simple and very explanatory with high quality pictures. It is the most useful book i have read regarding alopecias so far. ⭐ This book serves two purposes: First, it is the only alopecia book you will need as a practicing dermatologist or dermatopathologist in order to interpret challenging alopecia cases. It is both all-inclusive and succinct, with wonderful, convenient summaries at the end of each chapter. Second, the clinical and histologic photos are incredibly high-quality and beautiful; it’s honestly enjoyable to peruse and admire. The aesthetics are worthy of a coffee table book! For me, the most important aspect of this text is that it manages to make an incredibly difficult, confusing topic accessible and it simplifies concepts while providing sufficient detail and complexity. This is the mark of a truly effective textbook. If you are considering buying just one alopecia book, this one has no competition. It is well worth the cost–you will not regret it! ⭐ This is an outstanding next edition of “the classic hair atlas” with new clinical and histological images, updated terminology, and new disease classifications. The authors have meticulously selected the highest quality clinical and histopathological images of any dermatology atlas out there. The superb updated images are truly the heart and soul of this book! Also, I use the summary charts at the end of each disease-focused chapter almost every time I interpret a challenging hair case. This text is so up-to-date, it often eliminates the need to search PubMed for the more rare conditions, like fibrosing alopecia in a patterned distribution (FAPD) or TNF-alpha inhibitor associated psoriasiform alopecia, which have their own chapters. This is a must read for any practicing dermatologist or dermatopathologist who takes care of patients with hair loss. It is like having an expert hair consultant in your pocket. I know we all loved the 1st edition, but the 2nd edition has exceeded my expectations and will soon become your favorite. ⭐ Book is great, but the paper quality is cheaper than earlier prints of the same edition. Great way to save money on the publishers side.
