Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ I’ve wasted enough time on this book, so I’ll keep this short. If you’re a beginner, you won’t find much to help you in understanding the pros and cons of various openings. And, if you’re more experienced, for a variety of Open, Semi-Open, Closed, Semi-Closed and Flank Openings, the author provides a move by move rendering of games using various openings (one for a White win; one for a Black win). If you think studying these games will foster a deeper understanding of the openings, you’ll be upset when you discover errors (not chess mistakes) in the game listing. I studied two games for two openings and found moves that were impossible (erroneous notation) and Black moves omitted after White moves listed. Try following a game when you don’t know what Black’s move was! Isn’t chess supposed to be about precision? I’m wasting no more time on this book.

⭐ I loved the author’s first book, but this one relies primarily on chess notation with few images, so I need to get the board out when 20 moves are merely notated (Qxf3 Rxf3+ Kg2 Rg3+, etc.). I think more images and less notation would have made this book an easier read. Very comprehensive though, and perfect for the advanced chess wonk.

⭐ This is not one of the better opening tools/books. Perhaps if it was in book form I could just open it quickly. The example games are in algebraic notation, which is fine, but hard to picture and the diagrams after 10 moves or so don’t help that much. If you are going to use a phone or iPad to read this, you might as well use a tool that allows animation and exploration on a virtual chess board. I was hoping for more insights as a beginner, but I didn’t really get that either. I did not even consider reading on my small and slow kindle. Jumping to the opening as a reference would not be a strong suit of the kindle. And I love kindle books… but we all know it isn’t best for all content.

⭐ I love this book. Great for beginners, intermediate players and maybe even advanced(?).Openings (and the reasons behind them), open, closed, semi-closed games and otheruseful information is explained in a simple, straight forward way that I found veryinteresting and informative. One of the few chess books I’ve read that didn’t make mewant to nap after a few pages of endless notation. Recommend.

⭐ A very enjoyable chess book to read and study for beginners and even for those who used to play but haven’t for a long time. Great for getting older players back into the game. Don’t let the “Dummies” title fool you–I stopped playing 30 years ago and found this book very helpful to gently kick-start me back into playing recently.

⭐ Learning chess openings is not quick or easy. However, this book does simplify a complex subject and organizes it into a manageable process. The book does not take any of the work out of learning how to use chess openings effectively. What it does is to engage you step by step to help you stick with it and not give up. It also allows you to jump around the book so that you don’t have to master e4, etc. before trying something totally different. I gave it four stars. As much as I would like it to it’s not going to do the work for me, so I will reserve the five star for a book that does.

⭐ Good info. I hadn’t played in a while and the book help mePlay better

⭐ For the beginner and the intermediate player, this is the best chess opening bookbook on the market. This is the only book that clearly helps you choose the best type of opening foryour style of play. He uses a symbol, “Who Should Use It” for each opening in thebook. Next to the symbol he describes what type of player should use the opening. Many openings are presented — 343 pages. As a result, pawn to Q4 is bestfor me. He also gives useful strategy tips. The material is clearly taught and well organized. Don’t let the titlefool you into thinking that it’s a book for bad players. Finally, each opening has the game moves for when white wins and when blackwins. Thus offense and defense are both presented. Check this book out. It’s got a lot to offer.

⭐ I am not that advanced in Chess skill, but this book can be a bit deceiving. While trying to follow games via the chess notation I seemed to get lost… even when playing them out on a nearby board I found myself multiple times just completely losing the flow… within games the author will side track to a “what if” scenario and some of the formatting for this was tough for me.I enjoyed the layout of the book and you do find yourself finding a fondness for a certain style, which the author sort of says is the goal… so for this it is a solid book.

⭐ This book contains great strategies to master the highly demanding game of chess.
