User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The older, fourth edition, is SOOOOO much better than this new one; older had a great introductory chapter on the different variety of biologic compounds (e.g., lipids, carbs, nucleic acids, etc.) that was a such a great review/introduction to biochemistry, that chapter’s now gone and the different compounds are instead discussed in their dedicated chapters (e.g., the structure and definition of carbs are introduced in the chapter on carbohydrate metabolism, etc.), which might be fine if all the intervening chapters didn’t constantly reference those compounds, which leaves the reader jumping around (“wait, what was the difference between a proteoclycan and a glycoprotein? Lemme flip around through 70 pages to hunt for it…” Also, the fourth edition had WAY more little clinical connection side notes, the newer edition dropped most of them and replaced them with only three or four HUGE multi-paragraph clinical connections, which have multiple examples crammed into each, without any specificity overall. For some reason this new edition opens with a chapter on carb metabolism, then goes into introductory proteins and nucleic acids, DNA synthesis, etc., THEN resumes metabolism of lipids, proteins, etc….the fourth edition has all the metabolism chapters grouped together which made so much more sense…My biggest gripe though is about the addition of genetics, the fourth edition was Biochem and Molecular, this one is Biochem, Molecular AND GENETICS, but there’s not much actual genetics, there’s a brief NOT very detailed section on genetics in medicine tacked on to the end of the chapter on DNA (note, the DNA chapter was already in the fourth edition), and the dedicated chapter on genetics is mostly population-level stuff–no gene mapping, no LOD scores, nothing about viral techniques to deliver gene therapies, instead of going luke-warm on genetics they really should’ve given a REAL comprehensive separate book on genetics, and kept the biochem book the FANTASTIC book that it was, but instead they chipped away a lot of great material to make room for a lot of mediocre, non-detailed blah. BTW, the index is worthless, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve looked for something, figured they didn’t have it, then found a full paragraph about it later that WASN’T indexed at all. The good news is, the fourth edition still has almost everything covered in my first year molecular biology course in medical school, and you can get it used on amazon for a buck, which I’d recommend doing before they’re all gone.

⭐Great study resource: 9/10While a select few examples could be updated or edited to be easier to understand this book was a great resource as I prepared for the NBME subject exam on Biochem and Genetics. Great questions at the end as well as a practice test that is somewhat representative of what I saw on the real exam. Overall I thought that the end of chapter questions were more similar in caliber to the real test than the practice test, but that is just my opinion on the matter. What I really liked about this book was the great color pictures it has and level of detail that it goes into. As far as topics go, it covered all that I needed to know to do well on the subject exam.

⭐Do yourself a favor and purchase this book to aid you in your test preperation. This is a small investment to benefit highly from questions and answers, or concise outlined information that gets right to the chase. Add this to your medical school bookshelf at the beginning of first year and you will not regret your purchase!

⭐I like the content of the book, wish figures were in color. I am not sure if this book is supposed to be in color. Mine is black and white book, page 33 Figure 2.15 says that figures should have colors. I am not sure if I received a fake copy that is a copy of original book? Let me know if any of you have colored figures in the book??

⭐Not as much as I expected it. Has less information than I needed.

⭐Recommended.

⭐Lackluster packaging lead to many damaged pages in this book.

⭐If you want a more thorough yet concise enough review book for medical Biochemistry, go for LIR.If you want one with broad coverage of molecular biology and genetics and does not want to purchase a textbook for the topic, go for BRS Review. This book is more on genetics and molecular biology. I like the point-form arrangement of the book which makes reading easier. Moreover, there are abundant multiple choice exercises behind each chapter with answers, facilitating students’ learning of the subject. This book is not very thick, but I’m sure it’ll be quite useful.

⭐A very good book and a quick review before your final exam- can easily be completed in under a week with around 200 pages of actual information (excluding questions)

⭐This is a very nice book of biochemistry, it’s a review book but you can also use it as textbook, because it is so clear and fluid and also quite large. Covers all topic for NEET to step 1. Where the book falls behind is it’s limited number of MCQs.

⭐The content of the Book is good. But i have got a black&white version. It would be more interresting to study the book if it were colouring version.

⭐This book for USMLE but content is so good it can be very helpful to anyone who want biochemistry in condensed form than lengthy books I recommend it to all pg preparing students

⭐good review book of biochem.
