Description

More than two million medical students, doctors and other health professionals around the globe have owned a copy of Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine since it was first published. Now in its 23rd Edition, this textbook describes the pathophysiology and clinical features of the most frequently encountered conditions in the major specialties of adult medicine and explains how to recognise, investigate, diagnose and manage them. Taking its origins from Sir Stanley Davidson’s much-admired lecture notes, Davidson’s has endured because it keeps pace with how modern medicine is taught and provides a wealth of information in an easy-to-read, concise and beautifully illustrated format. This book will serve readers everywhere as a core text that integrates medical science with clinical medicine, conveying key knowledge and practical advice in a highly accessible and readable format. The opening section describes the fundamentals of genetics, immunology, infectious diseases and population health, and discusses the core principles of clinical decision-making and good prescribing. A new second section on emergency and critical care medicine encompasses poisoning, envenomation and environmental medicine, and introduces a new chapter on acute medicine and critical illness. The third section covers the major medical specialties, each thoroughly revised and brought fully up to date. Two new chapters on maternal and adolescent/transition medicine complement the one on ageing and disease. A new chapter on medical ophthalmology has been included. Clinical Examination overviews summarise the main elements for each system and now feature in the biochemistry, nutrition and dermatology chapters. Presenting Problems sections provide a clear pathway for the assessment of and approach to the most common complaints in each specialty. Practice Point summaries detail the practical skills that medical students and junior doctors must acquire. Emergency boxes emphasise the core knowledge needed to manage acutely ill patients. In Old Age, In Pregnancy and In Adolescence boxes highlight differences in the practice of medicine in these patient groups, and illustrate the interfaces between medical, obstetric and paediatric services. The text is extensively illustrated, with over 1000 diagrams, clinical photographs, and radiology and pathology images. The global perspective is enhanced by an International Advisory Board of experts from 17 countries, and by authors from around the world.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Although by now, after decades of clinical practice and research, I should be outgrown this standard textbook for medical students, I keep buying every other edition to keep up with the British way of studying and practicing medicine. I still admire the delicate balance of conciseness, comprehensiveness, a touch of basic science such as pathophysiology and pointing out the salient clinical picture. I love the brief chapters on vitamins , nutrition, and I reviewed some of the endocrine chapters. I loved the brief paragraph on primary hyperparathyroidism and thyroid gland in general. This book along with Hutchison’s Clinical Methods are the cornerstones of clinical medicine. In my opinion, every American medical student and physician should have a glimpse into the clinical nature of British medicine. It also reminded me that we “workup” diseases, but they “investigate” them. I find the word investigation more befitting a clinical inquiry.

⭐Listen, I fully agree that the Harrison’s in a truly exceptional book and wort every penny, but if your are the current schedules where you are required to read all of medicine in 3 months, while doing clinical rotations, then you will not even complete the 1st volume of Harrison’s. So then, you need to read everything, in 3 months, and agree to accept still NOT knowing everything, then this is the book for the medical student like you. I say read it twice, it will be well worth your time,

⭐My new favorite medical book, more complete than Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, very easy to read, I like how at the beginning of the chapters it reminds you what to examine and how. Very happy with this purchase.

⭐Amazing book, love the paper quality, the clarity and non-bullshit approach if this book. I’m a medicine resident and this book is helping me lay a strong foundation for my career in medicine. Recommend to anyone who is looking for a textbook they can finish reading during residency cover to cover.

⭐Bought for niece studying medicine. This is one of her recommended books.

⭐The text is not totally directed at the medical student compared to the previous edition. I found it a disappointment.

⭐Amazing text book

⭐Perfect

⭐This is an old friend who helped me in the final year now who’s back with much more answers and much clearer. The quintessential British tone is retained but the information provided is now deeper and much more integrated with reviews of the basic subjects than ever. Every topic is screened and edited to sculpt local treatment patterns. They have made it unapologetically bulkier but it’s worth it. The world of medicine is clear as a night sky and here’s your boat to sail. There are updates everywhere even for someone like me who passed only 5 years ago. So many many concepts have been changed/updated/simplified as per new research has simplified medicine and has made the molecular basis of practice much easier. Although some stubborn inflictions are made by the British editors like still they will not acknowledge the significance of mitochondrial DNA behind patho genesis of diabetes but then again exciting new research data’s have been included which literally will blow your mind (like “boom”).Our friend has grown and hasn’t lost the charm at all. Happy reading!

⭐What can I say I love it, I used to be a Kumar and Clark fan but anymore.

⭐Really good investment- so much info on each topic.I’m using it as a reference book for Acute Medicine- as a trainee ACP I was advised to purchase this.

⭐Really pleased I decided to invest in buying this book. It was recommended to me by an excellent medical registrar, whilst I am working as a trainee ACP in Acute Medicine. It’s comprehensive and easy to read. Loads of information on each speciality area.

⭐Brilliant diagrams and set out very logically. Would recommend to all undergraduate medics – I personally much prefer to Kumar and Clarke
