Description

Medical Statistics provides the necessary statistical tools to enable researchers to undertake and understand evidence-based clinical research. It is a practical guide to conducting statistical research and interpreting statistics in the context of how the participants were recruited, how the study was designed, what types of variables were used, what effect size was found, and what the P values mean. It guides researchers through the process of selecting the correct statistics and show how to best report results for presentation and publication. Clear and concise explanations, combined with plenty of examples and tabulated explanations are based on the authors’ popular medical statistics courses. The table of contents is divided into sections according to whether data are continuous or categorical in nature as this distinction is fundamental to selecting the correct statistics. Each chapter provides a clear step-by-step guide to each statistical test with practical instructions on how to generate and interpret the numbers, and present the results as scientific tables or graphs. The chapters conclude with critical appraisal guidelines to help researchers review the reporting of results from each type of statistical test. This new edition includes a new chapter on repeated measures and mixed models and a helpful glossary of terms provides an easy reference that applies to all chapters.

Editorial Reviews: From the Inside Flap Medical Statistics provides you with the essential knowledge and skills to undertake and understand evidence-based clinical research. This book is invaluable for researchers and clinicians engaged in a wide range of research studies. A practical, comprehensive, stepby-step guide is provided – from study design, required sample size, selecting the correct statistical test, checking test assumptions, conducting and interpreting statistics, interpretation of effect sizes and P values, to how best report results for presentation and publication. The SPSS commands for methods of statistical analyses frequently conducted in the health care literature are included such, as t-tests, ANOVA, regression, survival analysis, diagnostic and risk statistics etc. In addition, the most relevant corresponding output and interpretation is presented, with clear and concise explanations. Each chapter includes worked research examples with real data sets that can be downloaded. Critical appraisal checklists are also included to help researchers systemically evaluate the results of studies. This new edition includes a new chapter on longitudinal data that includes both a repeated measures and mixed models approach. Furthermore, all commands and output have been updated to IBM Statistics SPSS version 21 and SigmaPlot version 12.5.Data sets for this book can be downloaded fromwww.wiley.com/go/barton/medicalstatistics2e –This text refers to the paperback edition. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Amazing book. It covers all the important aspects that you need know as a physician wanting to perform statistical tests using SPSS. One of the great aspects about this book is that it gives you practice datasets in which you could double check if you did the analysis correctly. Also, it explains the assumptions of each statistical test and explain when should it be used.

⭐This is a very concise review of how to correctly pick a statistics test and actually perform one with SPSS. Especially practical for those in the field of medicine.

⭐Clear explanation of concepts. This book is also a good reference for readers who already have some background in statistics but would like to get a refresher on biostatistical concepts.

⭐Brought it for a doctor at work – other that it came on time I can’t say anything more

⭐Ok, this is the only book I give review because the author is highly intelligent with the way the example she provided. Many Statistics book come with a lot of story and nonsense in an attempt to prolong the pages. But this one do not and the book cover a lot of things that will gurantee for your excitement to keep you to the end of the pages . No wonder she’s the head of Sydney.

⭐For any healthcare staff (doctors, nurses, physios, dentists etc) this book is quite invaluable. It assumes some very basic knowledge of statistics eg the level at Stats for Dummies so it wont teach you stats. It also doesn’t have formulae. What is does do, is explain quite a bit about how to devise, and conduct a preliminary analysis on data. Many stats books detail the concepts using statistical packages eg Andy Field’s book is good, but this book puts into context medical data and analysis using SPSS and has a stepwise approach from data collection to analysis. It cannot replace a Statistician but for those healthcare workers who do not understand what to do next, once their data has been collected, this is a good book. There are logical chapters with explanations about correlation, regression, variance etc, when these are pertinent, also why these are pertinent and what these techniques mean with respect to medical data.I also found the tips on how to appraise the stats of papers to be useful since one of the points about research is how your data will answer questions different (or similar) to those in the published literature. Particularly useful to know how to do this when reading the literature and writing a discussion around the results and also in a viva voce when asked about how the published literature differs from the research results.Do not get if you are looking for a formal book on statistics in general or if you are training to be a statistician. It may not be relevant if you are mostly researching psychology but it could help with conecpts. Do get if you are beginning a medical related research project for the first time and have no idea how to go about analysing your data.

⭐The book is an excellent source for those people who work in health field and want to understand research papers statistics but also to improve their knowledge in the field of statistics. It is simple written, helpful and very understandable!

⭐I think it is a good book for who wants to start to learn statistics, Little theory and then tons of examples. Recommended

⭐Very good book for medical data analysis.

⭐Il est la meilleure option pour SPSS. Il est un excellent guide pour une meilleure compréhension et pour la rédaction d’un article médical.
