User’s Reviews

I’ve never written a book review before, but I am so astounded by how poorly this book is written that I couldn’t resist. If in some way I can steer someone away from this book, then I have done my good deed for the day.

I have ready many nursing textbooks and most all of them are poorly worded and excessively verbose, sacrificing quality for quantity, while seeming as if the authors are more interested in impressing the reader with phraseology than they are in imparting knowledge. But this book takes the cake.

To echo many of the other reviewers, this book is terribly written, to the point that some paragraphs and sentences are incomprehensible. Adding insult to injury, the organization (or lack there of) of this book is some of the worst I have seen, from the chapter level all the way down to the paragraph level. It is page, after page, after page of rambling drudgery. As others have said, in some cases it is almost as if related sentences were tossed into a hat, drawn out at random, then printed on the page. Another stated that reading this book was like reading stream of consciousness – that too is an accurate description. Furthermore, the book is full of pointless facts, tables and chapters full of senseless over-detail, and cartoon-like diagrams. It is not uncommon in this book to read an entire section on a disease or process, only to realize when you are done that you know nothing more about the disease/process than you did before. Why? Because the section is bloated with needless, loosely-related information combined with a lack of explanation of the essential processes and mechanisms of the disease, while simultaneously using vague, meaningless phrasing. Pathophysiology demands precise, clear language, but that is no where to be found in this book.

I think I know the reason why the book is this way, at least in part. The book is chock full of information copied from other sources that is either printed verbatim or poorly reworded, then pasted together. If you happen to have access to this book, you can see for yourself. Do an Internet search of “An introduction to epilepsy american epilepsy society” and choose the link that comes up from the National Institutes of Health website. Navigate to Chapter 1, section A under the heading “Basic Mechanisms of Focal Seizure Initiation and Propagation.” There you will find phrases verbatim to those on page 538 of this book, particularly those under “Seizure initiation.” Clearly what the “authors” of this book have done is to take their information from other sources either verbatim, or slightly reworded, then paste it all together and call it a textbook. The result is a book that is choppy, lacking in transitions, and oddly arranged with frequent incomprehensible sentences and paragraphs.

If you are another unfortunate soul that has been assigned this book, you will spend far more of your time and energy trying to comprehend the wording of sentences than you will learning the concepts of pathophysiology. If you have a choice, get a patho book written for medical students (e.g. Robbin’s) by someone that knows what they are talking about. You will find they are written much more clearly, focus on actual understanding and comprehension, and the authors are able to distinguish between mountains of useless information and what you need to know.

I’m using this book for an Advanced Pathophysiology course for nurse practitioner school. This is the most poorly written book I have ever laid eyes on. It is incredibly disjointed jumping about from one topic to another like a rabbit on crack. It turns simple concepts into maddening complicated mazes of definitions and poorly worded descriptions. It is a true disappointment to me that any school would use this kindling for such an important class. I believe I would be unable to understand these topics if it weren’t for the incredible undergrad patho class I took a few years back. I have learned nothing from this book and end up looking up all of my study topics using other resources. PLEASE if you are are a school and are making a decision about what book to use….. PICK SOMETHING ELSE!
