I’m an ER physician, and see patients with the full spectrum of problems in every specialty. NO WAY can I keep all the drugs in my head. The Tarascon Pharmacopoeia is far and away the best and fastest medication reference I use (compared to Epocrates, PDR, all the other electronic stuff) for dosage, forms available, pricing data. The new issue has added, in red ink, the conditions for which each drug is most commonly used. This is an ENORMOUS help when I’m trying to sort out 15 medication bottles that the patient has brought in and has no idea what any of the meds were prescribed for. I still use the iPad Touch to look up the meds by picture or imprint, usually with Epocrates — there is no way to include medication ID in the Tarascon pocket reference and keep it in a pocket. I am always astonished at how current the Tarascon references are! I get the new edition as soon as it is available every year. I honestly can’t imagine practicing without it.

Tarascon is my go to guide for drug information, and I purchase a new one every fall when the new edition comes out. The lab coat edition is a but more expensive than the pocket version, but has so much more information. It includes recommended dosing, non-approved uses and doses, breast milk safety, cost, excretion routes. Drugs are organized by system and class, so if your patient can’t get a class due to insurance, the alternatives in that class are right there! And the best part of all is that the print is so much BIGGER than the pocket version.

Most of my colleagues use a smartphone drug guide, but my book is far simpler and so much faster to use than epocrites. I race them to find drug information, and I win just about every time!
