Description

Clinical Scenarios in Surgery: Decision Making and Operative Technique presents 125 cases in all areas of general surgery: GI, breast, hepatobiliary, colorectal, cardiothoracic, endocrine, vascular, trauma, pediatric, critical care, and transplant. Each full-color case begins with a patient presentation and proceeds through differential diagnosis, diagnosis and treatment, surgical procedures, postoperative management, and a case conclusion. Each case includes key technical steps, potential pitfalls, take-home points, and suggested readings.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ This book will cover about 70-80% of what you need to know. Some chapters,
like redo parathyroidectomy seem excessive, especially in an age where a
graduating general surgeon will almost certainly not do a redo by
themselves or without endocrine fellowship. I used it as the basis of a
series of ABSITE lectures for junior residents, like it alot

⭐ I really loved the case-based approach in this book. It appealed more to
my learning style than other resources like “How to Win.” I think this is a
book that could be used as an adjunct to something like Cameron’s or
Greenfield’s from day one in residency, not just as preparation for the
boards. “How to Win” is better from the standpoint of practicing
“boardsmanship,” and for quick reviews of core subjects, but for methodical
studying of high-yield cases, I don’t think this book can be beat. I have
recommended it to all of the residents in my program.

⭐ My only regret is that I did not find out about this textbook sooner in my
career (ie. medical school or intern year of general surgery residency). It
is an excellent adjunct and an excellent textbook in it’s own right. A must
read for every general surgeon in addition to textbooks like Schwartz,
Greenfield, or Cameron. The cases are broad based and thorough, detailed
workup and thought processes behind treatments are described as well as
common must know procedures.Just an excellent book, cannot wait for the
next addition. I hope they keep adding more and more cases with the same
depth.

⭐ I used this for preparing for my oral boards, in addition to taking the
Osler course. I found this WAY more helpful, and at one tenth the price of
Osler! I read a lot of other books for the boards, and this is by far the
best (I passed my boards, btw). Highly recommended!

⭐ By far the best textbook to read before the general surgery oral board
exam. It is the only real text I can recommend (not in note form) and some
chapters are written incredibly well (EC fistulas, abdominal wall
reconstruction, duodenal injuries, and bile duct injuries – among the best
written chapters of any text for that matter). Every general surgery
resident/fellow has to read this book at some point in their careers.
Reading time is about 2-4 weeks on 1-2 chapters a day (very doable).

⭐ I am using this book to study for my oral boards. I wish I would have had
this book during residency. While it isn’t enough to pass the written exam,
I could have easily read this a few times during residency and had an
easier time on the wards. It is concise and very easy to read.I will update
this review after I take the board in March.

⭐ This book was requested by our Chairman in Surgery for a medical student.

⭐ Very good for General Surgery Oral Boards review. Each of the scenarios is
fairly thorough and includes discussion on workup and management and steps
of operative interventions. It would not suffice as the only resource,
especially as there are certain scenarios not included in this text, but
covers a lot of key topics.

⭐ Great book for oral board review Better organized and WAY less typos than
“How to Win….”

⭐ Dr. Dimick really did well. Concise and systematic. Especially appreciate
the short and sweet summaries of the operations as I am preparing for
boards.
