⭐ While Sjogren’s Syndrome: A Clinical Handbook by Frederick B Vivino, MD is primarily for clinicians, it is also a comprehensive and easy to understand book for patients. As a patient, I was happy to see such a broad spectrum of manifestations discussed and I can see myself referring back to this book with any future questions I might have about the disease . The chapters on ocular and oral issues included lists of OTC products. This was a terrific addition and probably my favorite part of the book since there were products of which I was not aware. The financial burden of Sjogren’s was also discussed. This highly recommended book book hits the mark all the way around

⭐ This is my “go to” reference for every question regarding the diagnosis and management of Sjögren’s syndrome.

⭐ Good book. These never have exactly what I am looking for, but very informative & current.

⭐ Clarity and guidance where there has primarily been speculation and subjectivity. Would expect no less from Dr Vivino and his colleagues whose level of integrity and passion about this disease is without parallel.

⭐ Sjögren’s syndrome is somewhat of a “stepchild” of rheumatic diseases because it traditionally does not receive the appropriate attention as do other similar so-called connective tissue disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematous. I suspect that few laypeople have heard of Sjögren’s syndrome, first discovered by a Swedish ophthalmologist decades ago. In my experience, relatively few healthcare providers don’t know much about it other than rheumatologists. Dr. Vivino is not only a rheumatologist but a world’s expert. He helped start the Sjogren’s and Dry Mouth Center at the Presbyterian Medical Center, now incorporated into Penn Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. This handbook is essential because it puts a magnifying glass on a condition that often defies precise diagnosis of a disease that we now know may be as common as RA and SLE land may accompany these disorders. Many patients are miserable from the defect in the body’s moisture-producing glands, notably the salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in profound dryness of the mouth and eyes, respectively. Other organ systems, such as the lungs, kidneys, genitals, and nervous system, can be affected. In Sjögren’s Syndrome: A Clinical Handbook, Dr. Vivino has recruited other global experts to discuss the history, epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathology, and unique clinical manifestations. His approach to appropriate steps for diagnosis and differential diagnosis is masterful. Overall management of Sjögren’s syndrome is notoriously tricky; however, both the recommended traditional and complementary approaches here will suit the reader well. Dr. Vivino was prescient in his views of vaccine safety for these patients in that the book was published just before the COVID-19 pandemic, the worst in a century. This well-referenced book is not just for rheumatologists. Pulmonologists, nephrologists, gynecologists, ophthalmologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and dentists will find at least portions of the book educational. Many patients and their caregivers will benefit from this resource.
