Description

Viruses are the last frontier of undiscovered life on our planet. The most abundant type of organism on Earth, they infect all types of cellular life, and, as micro-organisms that cause disease in their hosts, they are highly opportunistic and relentlessly efficient. They exist at the vanguard of DNA variance, exhibiting more structural diversity than plants, animals, archaea, or even bacteria. This 21st-century guide offers an engaging introductory section explaining exactly what viruses are and how they operate, followed by individual profiles of 101 of the world’s most notable examples, each with its own dazzling mugshot

User’s Reviews

Review In Virus: An Illustrated Guide to 101 Incredible Microbes, Marilyn Roossinck has beautifully crafted an ode to viruses and those who study them. . . . Its accessibility will make it appropriate for lovers of biology at all levels; the illustrations and breadth of coverage will make it enjoyable for expert virologists to read and share.—Emily Toth Martin, New Biological BooksWhat Roger Tory Peterson did for birds, Penn State University virologist Marilyn J. Roossinck has done for viruses. . . . [B]eautifully illustrated.—Laurence A. Marshall, Natural History[A] stunning explication of 101 viruses that infect everything from humans to archaea. Along with basics on life cycles, transmission and more, Roossinck offers succinct descriptions, schematic drawings and a gallery of electron-microscopy images.—Barbara Kiser, NatureThe rise of the Zika virus was one of the most troubling medical stories of the past year–and yes, it’s covered in this richly illustrated rogue’s gallery by virologist Marilyn J. Roossinck. There’s also a graphic explanation of the inner workings of viruses, and a foreword by renowned science writer Carl Zimmer.—Alan Boyle, GeekWire[A] very useful resource.– “Booklist”A visually appealing resource that will be useful for virologists while simultaneously appealing to the layperson curious about the fascinating and vital role these organisms play in the ecosystem.– “Library Journal”This light, richly illustrated overview of 100 different viruses is most appropriate for general readers.– “Choice”This well-illustrated guide provides an introduction to the biology of viruses and history of virology, as well as singling out 101 of these infectious agents to profile in more depth.– “Science News Magazine” –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

⭐ This book is a sort of atlas of viruses, with anIntroductory section giving a brief history of virology and a description of the Baltimore classification. Some of this may be difficult for people with no previous contact with basic molecular biology. Nevertheless, I like the basic idea of the book, but for one GLARING problem. The print fonts are sosmall that for anyone without perfect vision the book can only be read with a magnifying glass, under a strong light. This is so obvious that it was not immediately obvious to the editors. Be warned!

⭐ I love this book by my colleague Marilyn Roossinck. It’s beautiful, an Audubon-like picture book of viruses. A fabulous addition to any coffee table. But I’ve also been enjoying just dipping in to find weird things. A virus that causes tulips to be striped might have caused the first economic bubble. The biggest virus yet discovered was found 120 feet down in a ice core. Roossinck has chosen 101 “remarkable” viruses, and for each there is a striking picture and a few hundred easy-reading words on what makes them remarkable. Now, aficionados will disagree with her choice. For example, she is missing the hugely interesting Marek’s disease virus, which in just 50 years went from benign to one of the most lethal viruses known, an evolutionary process that led to the first anti-cancer vaccine. But for sure her eclectic choice makes you think. She covers the classic (measles) and the newsworthy (Zika), as well as the obscure (an apparently pointless virus of penicillin-producing fungi), the beneficial (a virus that is good for clover) and the downright fun (a virus that turns its host blue). If you’ve ever wondered about what’s in the invisible world that shapes our lives so much, this is the book for you. If you live with someone who has no such wonder, leave this book lying around.– Andrew Read, Evan Pugh Professor of Biology and Entomology, Eberly Professor of Biotechnology, and Director, Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics, Penn State.

⭐ I am 67 years old and the font they chose for this book is faint and incredibly small. I think it is a good book but hell, I cannot read it. Need a magnifying glass.

⭐ Excellent book. Buy the E book for kindle. Stunning pictures and diagrams explaining how the organic blocks need you to live. You will wear a mask after reading this. Covers different types of viruses. Im still reading it. Written for the average person to understand by using excellent diagrams.

⭐ Think of this as an encyclopedia for 101 viruses giving al sorts of information including geography of the locations typically found. It gets a little monotonous trying to read straight through, so I recommend taking it in a few viruses at a time.

⭐ I enjoyed the breadth of the selections. Learned a bit about how viruses replicate. Quick read. Well organized view of various viruses.

⭐ Terrific and useful summary, introduction, and map into this fascinating and complex field.

⭐ Great buy, visually stunning

⭐ Exactly what I was looking for. Each virus with photo and description.

⭐ Loved this book!!! It does a very good job of explaining viruses in a way anyone can understand.
