Description

Students who take the MRCPsych exams have often found the Basic Sciences component one of the hardest to pass and while it underpins all clinical practice, it will continue to be a large part of the Part II syllabus. Examination Notes in Psychiatry, Second Edition is a thorough and expanded revision guide that has helped many trainees tackle difficult subjects, such as Psychological Assessment, Psychopharmacology and Neuroimaging. All the material has been reviewed in the light of college recommendations and the changes to the syllabus, and the book now covers every subject in a succinct, easily absorbable style.

⭐ I can’t imagine a psychiatry registrar library without Malhi’s basic sciences book, it’s just hitting the bottom of our defects in neurology and medical issues. Mandatory for clinical practice and exams as well

⭐ This book is an excellent read prior to psychiatry college written exams. It’s essentially a summary of Stahl and Sims (but without the extra 700 pages) and provides a comprehensive summary of the bio-psycho-social model of psychiatry. What I found most helpful was the frequent inclusion of memory tricks/tips (mostly anagrams) to facilitate retention of the content. Another bonus is that one of the authors is based in Australia which makes the book quite relevant for Australians. It’s not overwhelming but does provide reasonably in-depth information to give a broad knowledge of psychiatry, enabling one to answer exam questions intellectually and in a holistic manner. The chapters include basic and social psychology, human development and learning theory, neurology and neuroanatomy/pathology/chemistry/imaging. There’s also chapters on genetics and statistics. Together with a good book on DSM/ICD diagnostic criteria, this book is a must for any psychiatric registrar (in Australia) about to sit their writtens. It’s all I used for 3 months prior to the writtens (and I passed).
