Reviews

This is a concise, yet comprehensive, well organized (84 chapters in 9 major subcategories of Pharmacology) text, with an abundance of excellent graphics and text boxes, which flows with a rhythmic consistency from chapter to chapter. It is well balanced in that has all the primary details intertwining both mechanistic and clinical indications for different drug classes, with a “New Developments” section for each chapter. While the first section covers all the essential information needed to understand the principles of pharmacotherapy, each chapter also has a specific section applying these principles for each drug class. The subdivision of different systemic targets and therapeutic aims: autonomic/voluntary nervous, central nervous, pain, inflammation, cardiovascular, endocrine, chemotherapy, and special considerations provides excellent coverage of the use of drugs to treat disease. Also, handy tabular listings of abbreviations and both the generic and proprietary names of the major drugs in each chapter is provided along with sections on clinical relevance, self-assessment questions, plus additional resources for the topics in each chapter. There is also extensive cross-referencing between chapters to minimize redundancy. The inclusion of a chapter (73) on dietary supplements “The Role of Nutraceuticals and Natural Products” is an important and valuable addition in view of their widespread use and mistaken views that they are harmless because they are not considered to be drugs. Of special note is the inclusion of a new chapter on cannabinoids that includes consideration of their analgesic properties in addition to describing the use of cannabidiol as an antiseizure medication.
