Reviews
I have read selected portions of Harrison’s 20th. Generally it is very well written and edited. Quite a superb compendium of medical information. However, my four-star rating is based on Chapter 83, Benign and Malignant diseases of the prostate. Approximately 12% of this chapter is devoted to benign prostatic hyperplasia BPH and the remaining 88% to prostate cancer. For Cecil the corresponding numbers are 48% and 52%, respectively, while in CMDT the percentages are 43 and 57. If Harrison’s is intended as a GENERAL internal medicine textbook for medical students or as a reference for GENERAL internists, then it seems that a more expanded coverage of BPH relative to prostate cancer would be useful to them. Of course, editorial decisions must be made to keep this book in two volumes, but I still give it four stars.
