User’s Reviews

Sandy Fritz has done a tremendous job in encapsulating — in easy to read but deeply scientific writing — the totality of massage therapy science. The evidence base for massage therapy is growing, and Sandy Fritz’ writings on this subject are among the best to be found anywhere. The text is well researched, and the information in this book is as up to date as possible, catching hold and describing easily the latest developments in the growing evidence-base regarding the therapeutic effects of touch. The neurology, physiology, biochemistry, “energetics” (acupuncture and other forms of energy), and human effects of touch are described beautifully.

I found the book a superb introduction to the massive world of bodywork and touch therapies. Cautions and contraindications to massage therapy — and therapist and client interactions — are provided for easy identification. The list of conditions that massage may ameliorate that Sandy Fritz has gathered evidence for is very impressive.

For instance the studies done at the University Of Miami School Of Medicine have shown that massage produces very beneficial effects upon the nervous system, the endocrine system, the immune system, and neurotransmitter levels. In fact across decades of studies, decreases have been noted in anxiety, depression, and stress hormones with increased alertness and better performance of cognitive tasks at the same time (making us more creative and think more clearly). The pressure stimulation associated with massage increases vagus nerve activity, which in turn lowers physiological arousal and stress hormones such as cortisol. Decreased cortisol levels in turn lead to enhanced immune function.

Massage has always been one of the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. When a person has sore, aching muscles, abdominal pains, or a bruise or wound, the instinctive impulse is to touch and rub that part of the body to obtain relief. The fastest growing segment of our population is those over 80 years of age. Many elderly people are alone and their spouses have passed away and their families are busy with their own lives. I have seen profound improvements in both physical and emotional health for the elderly in their interactions with massage therapists.

Massage professionals are the experts in this kind of healing touch, and their work is highly beneficial and recommended. This book covers it all and may come to be considered a classic in the field. Highly recommended.

All four tapes in the series are just over an hour of material total. (approx. 20 minutes each after the titles and intros) It uses a lot of unspecified and inaccurate “jargon.” Listen closely to the terms and words used in tapes 3 & 4. The first tape is the most bizarre material I have ever seen in my 45 years as a massage therapist and registered nurse (I am 65 and became a CMT at 20 years of age a RN at 25). In my opinion the draping information presented by the obese, older woman in the black “outfit” verges on mentally pathological, as in obsessive compulsive. As presented the positioning, “packing” with bolsters and the elaborate “costuming” of the client will take much of the one hour, that could be used to actually care for the client. Every serious student of massage should view, share and discuss this material as evidence of how weird massage education became in this time period. I believe the author had some personal issues and was attempting to impose them on those viewing the videos. Impressionable novice student therapists may have been severely damaged by this material in my opinion. Please buy any copy you can, view it, become amused and appalled, then archive it so it will not be repeated or destroy it to prevent is being taken as factual. The five stars are based on it needing to be viewed by every reasonable practitioner and every knowledgeable massage client.
