Description
This volume provides the definitive guide to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), the psychotherapeutic approach developed by Francine Shapiro. EMDR is one of the most widely investigated treatments for posttraumatic stress disorder, and many other applications are also being explored. Presenting background on EMDR’s development, theoretical constructs, and possible underlying mechanisms, the volume also contains detailed descriptions and transcripts that guide the clinician through every stage of therapeutic treatment, from client selection to the administration of EMDR and its integration within a comprehensive treatment plan. Among the many clinical populations for whom the material in this volume has been seen as applicable are survivors of sexual abuse, crime, and combat, as well as sufferers of phobias and other experientially based disorders. Special feature: Two online-only appendices were added in 2009 (www.guilford.com/EMDR-appendices). These appendices comprehensively review current research on EMDR and its clinical applications. EMDR is now recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as an effective treatment for ameliorating symptoms of both acute and chronic PTSD (APA Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). New to This Edition: *Updated neurobiological data, findings from controlled clinical studies, and literature on emerging clinical applications. *Updated protocols and procedures for working with adults and children with a range of presenting problems.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐As I voyage into the world of understanding mental illness, I find that this aspect of treatment for PTSD becomes fully understandable upon completion of this book. EMDR is actually a very simple technique, but the setup is very detailed and requires hours of therapist/patient familiarity in order to fully benefit from the application. A deep understanding of the patient history is great for therapy in general, but EMDR is specifically useful for treating your current manifestations. If practiced properly you can cure some individuals almost completely, but results do vary. But all parts of the process are good for the patient regardless of the actual efficacy of the technique. So the clinical endeavor as a whole is a win-win situation. No stone is left unturned in this foray into one of the most useful, yet in my opinion, neglected set of skills available to practitioners of the mental healing arts.
⭐I have the hardback and the kindle version. I have to admit I like the Kindle version better. Fast read, understandable, and so much better than then 1st edition (which I have as well). Shapiro is amazing in how she explains EMDR and walks you through every step with samples and examples. There is absolutely no way that one can not grasp EMDR from her in-depth research and writing. By the way her writing is clear, concise, and comprehensive. Even the Kindle speech-to-text is excellent. Definitely for professionals. Not that someone who isn’t in the field would not gain insight from the book but it is targeted to those who wish to practice the modality. Why did I find the Kindle version better because I used speech-to-text which for me got me through the readings faster and with better understanding.
⭐I discovered EMDR because it was well mentioned and reviewed in another book I read about depression. I did my research and watched some sessions on YouTube and albeit convincing, they seemed like circus’ mentalist tricks. And yet, I was curious, bought this book and tried it in some of my more stable patients who agreed.I can’t argue with results. After some sessions my patients and I were mesmerized. I got in few sessions results I tried to achieve for months. And yet, it is weird. EMDR hasn’t any solid science explaining why it works. Ok; many health sciences are like that, especially everything dealing with the mind. What bothers me is that every hypothesis presented in the manual feels like mumble jumble sci-fi.I’m pleased with EMDR, but I need more answers than Shapiro gave me.
⭐I purchased this book as a requirement for an EMDR course I am taking. The book is well written, clear and concise. The information is really needed to gain clarity to understand the EMDR process. I’m extremely happy that I purchased this book. The information has answered all of my questions that have come up during my training. I highly recommend this book!
⭐This is like a text book. This book is good for any therapist who plans to get their training in EMDR. I read it after my level 1 training. I was glad I read it after the training, and during my initial sessions with clients. It answered some questions I had while I was using EMDR with some of the clients I see. It is a great guide book.
⭐Must have text for clinicians preparing for EMDR training. Not for the lay person. Shapiro is a brilliant writer. Best textbook I have ever read -The cover removes from my hardback version and the dark blue plain book with gold lettering looks very professional and draws less attention as I take it everywhere to read – even the gym.
⭐This restatement of Francine Shapiro’s standard overview of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)outlines the standard protocols for this proven treatment method. The methods, theory, and failsafe procedures are carefully explained for clinician practitioners. Careful liability reduction checks are examined and encouraged throughout the manual. This book alone is not a substitute for training in EMDR, yet will assist the new and veteran EMDR practitioner in remaining competernt in the skills and therory. I keep it handy for frequent review.
⭐I understand and read the time limit for returns. I have contacted this vendor several times and received the notification, “Sorry your time limit to return has expired.”. I believe in integrity and doing the right thing. The fact is that the beginning of the book was fine, but when I finally got to the middle of the book 200 pages were missing (after the limitations to return). The right thing to do is to send a new book that is not damaged. This is a tool I use as a professional counselor and need it. It was not inexpensive or this wouldn’t matter so much, but integrity is integrity. I’ve asked them to rectify this situation three times and have heard nothing back. I’m happy to send back the book, as they will see the manufacturing damage for yourself. SInce they have not contacted me, I suspect that they knowingly sell damaged products to unsuspecting customers. I’m still hoping that they will do the right thing and I will happily recant this complaint.
⭐I bought the text for the EMDR training that I was taking. I am a therapist who works mainly with clients who have suffered trauma. This therapy has made fast and deep healing possible. Of course you need the training along with the book! I highly recommend it! For affordable training look up the “Humanitarian Assistance Program EMDR”
⭐I have been considering studying EMDR for some time, having worked in Psychotherapy for several years. This book is refreshingly “human” in style, avoiding the overly complicated jargon and and unnecessary complexity of other books I have read.A relatively easy to read book, it clearly outlines the principles and also the protocols and procedures of eye movement desensitisation and reprogramming therapy. I am reading it in preparation for my formal training which begins in October this year – can’t wait!
⭐As described and arrived on time. Thank you!!
⭐Just beginning training and this book was recommended as the reading. I was concerned at its price and age but it was the only book on the list. I paid the price and was glad. It is well written, concise and great at covering the material in a clear way.
⭐Useful tool
