Description

Chronic illness continues to be the leading cause of death and disability in adults in the United States. It impacts annual healthcare costs and significantly contributes to caregiver fatigue. Lubkinโ€™s Chronic Illness: Impact an Intervention, Eleventh Edition provides a solid foundation for nursing students by teaching them the skills and knowledge they need to care for both patients and families impacted by chronic illness. The text takes a holistic and patient-centric approach in addressing the acute needs of patients and their families as they navigate the challenges of chronic illness. The hallmark feature of this text remains its keen focus on the psychosocial issues experienced by both the individual and families involved, an area of care which is often overlooked. The Eleventh Edition has been substantially revised and will focus on population health including new and updated content on various populations. To enhance the learning experience, the author features real-life journal entries from both patients and caregivers providing a meaningful way for students to truly understand chronic illness from each unique perspective.Coverage of the difference between chronic disease and chronic illnessDiscussion of social isolation as a chronic illness Mindfulness presence in caregiving The perception of illness from the patient and partner perspectivePatient education on the benefits of telehealth Managing chronic disease through social media community building An overview of the three types of spiritual assessmentHow to transition from home care to residential careNew content on Medicare and Medicaid waiver programs

Reviews

Editorial Reviews: About the Author Dr. Larsen practiced nursing from 1969 until she retired in 2013. Her last 28 years of practice were as a faculty member and administrator in schools of nursing that offered BSN and MS degrees. Her clinical and educational expertise was chronic illness and the psychosocial concepts that are associated with patients and caregivers with chronic conditions. To that end, Dr. Larsen published her own personal account of chronic illness as she and her late husband battled cancer. Many of those experiences are included within this text. Dr. Larsen maintained certification as a rehabilitation registered nurse (CCRN) from 1986-2011. Dr. Larsen has been associated with this text, first as the author of the rehabilitation chapter, since 1995. She was asked by Ilene Lubkin to co-edit the text beginning with the 4th edition. With Ms. Lubkinโ€™s death in 2005, she became the sole editor with the 6th edition. Dr. Larsen retired as Professor Emeritus from the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY, in 2013.
