Description

This systematic review examines the utility of neonatologist-performed echocardiography (NPE) for early detection of cardiovascular dysfunction in septic neonates. Analyzing 12 studies (438 septic newborns), the review confirms that septic neonates exhibit significant hemodynamic changes, such as increased risk of pulmonary hypertension, left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, and warm shock physiology (higher cardiac outputs). The study underscores the necessity of wider NPE use and standardized protocols to tailor hemodynamics-based treatments and improve outcomes in this vulnerable population.
