Reviews

“This is a novel and much needed book. It brings together psychiatry and social science in innovative ways, both in terms of theory and methods and in terms experimenting with new ways of writing. It is refreshing to see contributions by young and emerging social science writers grappling with cutting edge issues that transgress disciplines and academic cultures. Their findings should make academic and non-academic readers alike think afresh about mental health as an issue not only of medicine and medication but of culture and socialisation. Most importantly, the book makes us all think about whether it is possible or desirable to take refuge in biomedical certainty alone when dealing with mental health issues. Acknowledging and embracing uncertainty might be a healthier perspective, and one adopted in this book.” (Brigitte Nerlich, Professor of Science, Language and Society, University of Nottingham)

Description

Knowledge of the three-dimensional structure of a protein is absolutely required for the complete understanding of its function. The spatial orientation of amino acids in the active site of an enzyme demonstrates how substrate specificity is defined, and assists the medicinal chemist in the design of s- cific, tight-binding inhibitors. The shape and contour of a protein surface hints at its interaction with other proteins and with its environment. Structural ana- sis of multiprotein complexes helps to define the role and interaction of each individual component, and can predict the consequences of protein mutation or conditions that promote dissociation and rearrangement of the complex. Determining the three-dimensional structure of a protein requires milligram quantities of pure material. Such quantities are required to refine crystallization conditions for X-ray analysis, or to overcome the sensitivity limitations of NMR spectroscopy. Historically, structural determination of proteins was limited to those expressed naturally in large amounts, or derived from a tissue or cell source inexpensive enough to warrant the use of large quantities of cells. H- ever, with the advent of the techniques of modern gene expression, many p- teins that are constitutively expressed in minute amounts can become accessible to large-scale purification and structural analysis.

As comprehensive as it gets for neurology textbooks. This edition has lots of updates that have been needed for quite some time. Certainly a valuable resource for both resident and attending levels. As far as text books go, this is easy to navigate from index to subject, and clearly updated to fit the needs of a current practitioner.

Description

This comprehensive reference work edited by one of the leading authorities on obesity presents an up-to-date survey of the current scientific understanding of the metabolic syndrome, as well as an overview of the most significant changes to the field over the past 30 years. This volume is a thorough reference for obesity and the metabolic syndrome and will prove an indispensable resource for clinicians and researchers at levels worldwide. The obesity epidemic has generated immense interest in recent years due to the wide-ranging and significant adverse health and economic consequences that surround the problem. Much attention has been focused on behaviors that lead to obesity, in particular to over consumption of energy-dense food and to sedentary lifestyle. However, obesity is an extremely complex condition with poorly defined pathogenesis. In addition, when combined with other comorbidities such as hypertension and dyslipidemia, obesity often leads to a patient diagnosis of metabolic syndrome, a very troubling condition that has grown, and is continuing to grow, rapidly each year in prevalence worldwide. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions ― increased blood pressure, a high blood sugar level, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels ― that occur together, increasing one’s risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This resource covers the full range of scientific and clinical aspects: epidemiology, genetics, environmental factors, pathophysiology, diseases associated with obesity, and clinical management.

Description

For too long, bacterial metabolism and bacterial pathogenesis have been studied as separate entities. However, the scientific community is beginning to realize that not only are bacterial nutrient acquisition and utilization essential for pathogenesis, but that interfering with the pathogen-specific metabolic pathways used during infection can regulate virulence factor expression and might lead to effective breakthroughs in a variety of treatments.
