Description

A new book in the acclaimed Nutrition Society Textbook Series, Nutrition Research Methodologies addresses the rapidly advancing field of nutrition research. It covers the diverse methodologies required for robust nutritional research to ensure thorough understanding of key concepts, both for students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and for scientists working in nutrition research.

Reviews

Like another commenter stated, this book could be really great but is lacking in some areas. We are using this book for our MNT classes but find the information for nutrition therapy isn’t detailed enough or is lacking information. This may be fine for class, but future dietitians will definitely need to supplement this with other resources to feel prepared for their DI. Still a good book to have, though.

Description

An estimated 60 million Americans suffer from pain. There has been an explosion in pain research, new pharmaceuticals, the recognition of complementary and alternative therapies, interventional techniques and surgery, professional pain societies and providers with expertise in pain management. Still, the most common condition seen in primary care settings and in pain clinics is lower back pain. Despite the high prevalence of back and neck pain in the population, treatment and ongoing management of these conditions continues to pose challenges in various clinical settings. Educational resources for both primary and specialist clinicians alike are needed to address these challenges.

Description

As a result of the rapidly growing rate of obesity worldwide, clinicians are struggling to provide the best strategies for treating obese patients with concomitant pulmonary conditions. Obesity does not simply change the epidemiology of pulmonary disease; obesity has a profound impact on the pathophysiology of common pulmonary diseases. Obesity affects the severity of asthma, response to treatment, and is likely a major modifier of the phenotype of asthma. Obesity also appears to affect response to pathogens, and as such has a major influence on response to pneumonia, and has a significant impact on outcomes pertaining to acute lung injury in the intensive care unit. Obesity and Lung Disease: A Guide to Management is the first text in the field to cover the full range of issues related to managing obese patients with pulmonary problems. All the relevant conditions, in the context of obesity, are covered, including airway inflammation, sleep apnea, asthma, pulmonary hypertension, obesity hypoventilation, as well as others. Written by an international group of experts, this important new volume is an invaluable resource for all clinicians and scientists concerned with the challenging problems surrounding obesity and lung diseases.

Description

With the advent of the worldwide obesity epidemic, a concurrent rise has occurred in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is affecting younger individuals-the disease is no longer exclusive to adulthood. Diabetic micro- and macrovascular complications are also occurring at an earlier age, leading to increasing demands and costs on the healthcare system. In addition, the morbidity, disability and premature death caused by diabetic complications create a huge burden to families, employers and society at large. Thankfully, there has been a tremendous growth in new therapeutic classes of medications to help manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. These agents target many of the pathophysiologic defects of the disease with fewer side effects than the older agents. Newer insulin formulations have more predictable kinetics so patients can achieve better glycemic control with less risk of hypoglycemia and weight gain. Insulin delivery devices have also improved to include higher quality insulin pens, finer and shorter pen needles, and more technologically advanced insulin pumps.

The objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) has become widely employed in intensive care medicine (ICM) exams such as the UK Final Fellowship of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM), the European Diploma of Intensive Care (EDIC) exam, or the Australia and New Zealand Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM). This book is not only an essential tool for the rehearsal of OSCEs in preparation for these exams, but also for American and Indian exams, and any other exams within the field of intensive care medicine. The OSCE is a style of examination that requires the candidate to present specific information in a short space of time matched to a prescriptive mark scheme. This book allows candidates preparing for an ICM OSCE to format their knowledge for this type of examination whilst practising and rehearsing against time. The 60 OSCE stations provide a broad array of topics from past exams ranging across the training ICM curriculums. The mark schemes are presented in a short, punctuated form allowing the candidate access to important points, ideal at the sharp end of an exam campaign. The 5 sets of OSCE exams are designed to run as a set of 12. Each set will have an array of clinical scenarios requiring swift assessment, diagnosis, recommendations for investigations and management, whilst also exploring aspects of pathophysiology. There are a number of data-interpretation tools that are incorporated into clinical scenarios as well as standalone stations for electrocardiogram and radiology analysis. This book is an important preparatory tool crucial to the armamentarium of any candidate preparing for an ICM exam.
