Description

This comprehensive book covers the knowledge needed to diagnosis and treat patients with acute and chronic pain. Sections dedicated to patient evaluation, medication management, treating patients with more complex circumstances and interventional management provide clinically-relevant information on an array of topics relevant to both the generalist and specialist. Some sections being organized in a diagnosis based approach help to focus on these topics and serve as a quick reference. A practical and easy-to-use guide, Pain Management and Palliative Care provides a broad foundation on pain assessment and management and is an invaluable daily companion for those managing patients experiencing pain.

Reviews

Decent review book for my second board revert but finding multiple errors in the explanation of answers which are contradictory. For instance I just answered a question about acute treatment of herpes zoster. Capsaicin was one of the choices and supposedly the correct answer was”all of the above” however in the explanation capsaicin was noted not to be appropriate treatment. This is just one example. Finding at least one of these on every chapter. Otherwise the book has been fine.

Description

Pain Medicine Board Review is a comprehensive guide for preparing for the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) certification or recertification in Pain Medicine, and for residents preparing for in-training examinations in Pain Medicine. The text is organized into 28 chapters covering topics such as Anatomy, Physiology of Pain, Pharmacology, Diagnosis of Pain, and various pain syndromes. Each section includes questions, answers, and detailed explanations with highlighted key points, and concise further reading lists. Questions follow the ABMS style, and the explications of answers carefully address all points in the ABMS content outline for Pain Medicine. A section on imaging includes high quality magnetic resonance images, ultrasound images, fluoroscopic images and other images that will enable the examination candidate to answer questions that determine knowledge of pathological states as compared to normal and complications of treatments.

As a physician in training, I found Dr. Walsh’s textbook to be an excellent resource for dealing with day-to-day clinical duties, as well as for preparing presentations. The text is a good mix of theory and clinical evidence, sprinkled with sound opinion. Chapters cover all the facets of palliative medicine and written by a veritable roster of who’s who in the specialty. I did find that the chapters may need to be better organized in order to provide quicker access to information. All in all, I would recommend this reference to health professionals who are both learning and practicing palliative care.

Description

Despite the proliferation of pain clinics and various pain-oriented therapies, there is an absence of data supporting any substantial change in the statistics regarding the incidence, development and persistence of pain. As renowned pain clinician and scientist Daniel M. Doleys argues, there may be a need for a fundamental shift in the way we view pain. In this thoughtful work, Doleys presents the evolving concept and complex nature of pain with the intention of promoting a broadening of the existing paradigm within which pain is viewed and understood. Combining neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy of science, this book reviews the history of pain and outlines the current concepts and theories regarding the mechanisms involved in the experience of pain. Experimental and clinical research in a broad array of areas including neonatal pain, empathy and pain, psychogenic pain, and genetics and pain is summarized. The notion of pain as a disease process rather than a symptom is highlighted. Although there is a continued interest in activation of the peripheral nociceptive system as a determining factor in the experience of pain, the growing appreciation for the brain as the intimate ‘pain generator’ is emphasized. The definition of consciousness and conscious awareness and a theory as to how it relates to nociceptive processing is discussed. Finally, the author describes the potential benefit of incorporating some of the concepts from systems and quantum theory into our thinking about pain. The area of pain research and treatment seems on the precipice of change. This work intends to provide a glimpse of what these changes might be in the context of where pain research and therapy has come from, where it currently is, and where it might be headed.
