I am a nursing instructor at an LPN/LVN program in CA. I find this resource helps will explanation of why medications “work” better than others and when coupled with the pathophysiology the students have a better understanding of why one medication would be prescribed for one Patient/Client and not another when both Patient/Clients have the same condition. The illustrations and explanations clarify and assist with learning in my student groups. I highly recommend this book.

Description

Ideal for introductory pharmacology courses, LWW’s Pharmacology for the Health Professions offers a concise introduction to pharmacological concepts for students in the health professions. Now in a fully updated Second Edition, this full-color text provides a solid foundation in the basic principles of pharmacology, including the actions, indications, contradictions, and adverse effects of drug classes. A companion website offers animations and self-study materials for students and teaching resources for faculty.

Reviews

This book is clearly written and extremely helpful. If you are in a rehab field, having a pharmacology text geared toward your specific issues is extremely helpful. I used this text in preparation for GCS exam and found it very useful. I also have a pharm text which is general in nature, and I refer to this one far more often because it addresses topics more clearly and more specifically in context to what I do. Would recommend this as an excellent reference to anyone in a therapy discipline.

Warning to my nursing student peers, the info in this edition is NOT current or even close enough to study from. I took the quiz in the book and during lecture my professor was pulling updated NCLEX practice questions that directly conflicted with 3 answers given in this book, during just a single lecture on Anti-Parkinsonism drugs. So frustrating.

Description

I love all the Davis series, even pharmacology.. These books are all broken down by subject and than each chapter is further broken down into specific sections. Each chapter had at least 75 question to practice a single subject matter… these books helped me to get straight A in Nursing. Everyone always asked me how i did so well on test and i would always give credit to these books. They were a great investment

Reviews

The content of the book is as expected, but I am highly frustrated at the charts and tables. The print on the charts/ tables are too small to read and when you try to enlarge the print, the letters appear really fuzzy. So basically, the charts and tables are useless. I wish I purchased the actual textbook rather than the kindle version. Kindle really needs to fix this because it is a terrible inconvenience for students! So I give poor reviews and do not recommend this kindle book to anyone…just buy the actual textbook!

Reviews

I bought this handbook during my third year of pharmacy school and wish I had bought it sooner. The chapters are nicely summarized and short. I read this prior to reading the DiPiro textbook, so that I would have a nice overview prior to diving into details. I read each chapter again prior to quizzes and exams. They contain all the pertinent info, as well as some very helpful charts. I continued to reference it during my 4th year APPE rotations, and brought it along with me to my PGY1 residency. This handbook is GOLD!

Description

Established in its first two editions as the standard advanced pharmacotherapeutics text for nurse practitioners, students, and physician assistants this completely revised and updated new edition offers guidelines on prescribing drugs for over 50 common diseases and disorders. Organized by disorder rather than drug class this new edition includes algorithms and case studies that illustrate critical thinking aspects of prescribing, such as drug selection, lifespan considerations, therapeutic drug monitoring, adverse reactions, unexpected outcomes, and when to change therapy. The third edition includes coverage of pharmacogenomics and travel medicine. The section on Depressive Disorders discusses weaning patients from SSRIs and changing from one medication to another. Switching from brand names to generics is dicussed in various chapters.

Reviews

This book is amazing! Best textbook I’ve had in a long time. There is excellent information in here. Each chapter has a very concise, well written pathophysiology, followed by specific diagnostic criteria, medications, and medication guidelines for a specific disease process. At the end of each chapter is a helpful box that includes monitoring and follow-up which is also very useful. The thing I appreciate most about this book is the brevity and clarity it has in explaining/discussing concepts. It also makes cross comparisons with nice tables between different sets of guidelines, and usually includes algorithms for drug selection. I will be keeping this one as a reference when I begin practicing as an FNP.

Needed an new edition as a refresher as it’s been 14 years since graduation from pharmacy school. The format has changed somewhat, but still offers thorough review of ‘pathophysiologic approach’ to disease states and current pharmacological therapies.

This was required reading for University of Florida pharmacy students. It is a pretty good overview and easy to search to find quick answers for general questions.
