Description

Nearly 2 million Americans develop a healthcare-associated infection each year, and some 100,000 of them die as a result. Such infections are highly preventable, particularly through the adoption and implementation of evidence-based methods for reducing patient infection at the point of care. In cases where hospitals fall short of their goals for improving infection prevention, their failures are often rooted in a low rate of staff adherence to the new prevention policies.

Description

The present book reveals the importance of preventive medicine in cardiology and public health, addressing the lack of a broad discussion of this topic in the current literature. It examines the most important risk factors for different cardiovascular diseases, discussing them in detail from a clinical standpoint and presenting important information from a preventive medicine perspective. Further, specific chapters discuss the burden of cardiologic risk factors in special contexts, such as in women, child and adolescents, and in low-income populations. Lastly, a number of conditions that are often overlooked in terms of their cardiological impact are discussed, such as Chagas disease, rheumatic cardiomyopathy and post-traumatic stress disorder. Cardiovascular diseases are still the major cause of death in the world, even though they are considered preventable clinical conditions. The increased prevalence of some risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is an important concern for cardiologists around the world. On the other hand, primary prevention programs have proven their efficacy concerning some known and treatable risk factors, such as with hypercholesterolemia, hypertension, diabetes and smoking, but still need to be made more of a priority in public health.

Description

Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders: A Historic and Scientific Perspective provides a complete historical context that is crucial for students and researchers concerned with primary immunodeficiency. When researchers have a poor understanding of the way we arrived where we are in research, they can miss important points about a disease, or miss out on how to approach new diseases. This historical knowledge of research can assist greatly by showing how it was done in the past, demonstrating the successes and failures, so that it can be done better in the future.

Description

Presenting the most current and relevant information on the diagnosis and management of primary ovarian insufficiency, also known as premature ovarian failure (POI/POF), this book presents two equally important voices. The first is the scientific, evidence-based voice discussing the latest information on POI/POF in a concise and logical fashion: etiologies, symptoms, genetics, mechanisms, associated conditions, as well as psychological and lifestyle considerations. The second voice presents the first-person stories of affected women, who are often faced with a diagnosis of irreversible infertility at a very young age and who somehow learn to live with great uncertainty about their ability to create a family – a core identity issue for many women. It is thus not simply a clinical, case-based presentation, but a more collaborative effort between clinicians who are well-versed in the field and women who have POI/POF. Primary Ovarian Insufficiency: A Clinical Guide to Early Menopause will therefore be an excellent practical yet personal reference for OB/GYNs, reproductive medicine specialists, and any clinician, nurse or health care worker treating women living with POI/POF.

So far, so good. Seems pretty legit, little more advanced than MKSAP, but organized well. Great little resource.

It was a pleasure to review and read Dr. Mosca’s book on pediatric foot and ankle deformities. The principles that Dr. Mosca reviews and his treatment regimen comprises an almost 30-year experience with pediatric foot and ankle problems. He begins with basic principles and goes through several thoughtful principles that he elucidates in a very excellent fashion. He then reviewed his assessment principles and then in chapter 4 proceeds with management principles. Although these deal with pediatric issues, there are actually things that are very helpful in the treatment protocol for adults as well. In chapters 5 through 8, he deals initially with foot and ankle deformities, then foot malformations and soft tissue procedures and following this, bony procedures.

Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, 3rd Edition is 80% larger than the second edition. Most of the authors are with the National Institutes of Health, but the material is largely applicable to both government- and industry-funded research…This book has been selected for The First Clinical Research Bookshelf, essential reading for clinical research professionals.–Journal of Clinical Research Best Practices, May 2013
