This is a great physiology textbook! I’m a little over 100 pages in and thought I would leave my thoughts and findings so far. The full online version of the book and resources are included for free! Sixteen video animations, multiple choice questions on each unit of the book, and 25 enhanced images where you can quickly hide the labels, quiz yourself, and then click to see the correct label are all part of the online version resources. There are no quizzes or questions at the end of each unit in the physical print edition (I think the Guyton and Hall Physiology Review 3e is geared toward this aspect). The general layout of the textbook is two columns of text per page with many figures and tables interwoven. The font of the text is clear and easy to read. The text guides you through the figures and explains them well as it is teaching the subject making for a far better learning experience than others where they just have a description underneath the figure (in this textbook there is also a very brief description under the figure but mainly is described in the main part as you are reading). There are mini bibliographies at the end of each unit allowing you to know where you might start to further dive into that topic and read some of the current research papers. Modern research and findings have been seamlessly incorporated. An index is included at the back of this book, but there is no glossary.

Fields’ remains the most trusted text book on human medical virology, and it had not been updated since the last edition was published in 2007. Modern biology moves fast. The advent of new technologies, such as massively parallel nucleic acid sequencing, not to mention discoveries in related fields such as molecular & cell biology and immunology, which have both led to and been cross-pollenated by progress in virology, have resulted in huge advances. Not to mention that virologists carrying o “classical” approaches from the 1990’s have also made some illuminating findings since 2007. As such, six years is an eternity, so the 6th Edition was eagerly anticipated, and long overdue. The book comes in two volumes and covers basic science of viral replication, the clinical aspects of how viruses cause disease, and the epidemiology to explain how these pathogens spread through populations. The first volume includes chapters with general information on topics such as the history of virology, vaccines, antiviral drugs, the innate immune system, how viruses enter cells, and so on. In the later part of the first volume and all of the second, the specific biology of the major families of viruses that cause disease in humans are covered.

It’s colorful, has a lot of graphics and bubbles and such, but these feel just distracting. For the EM boards, you’re reviewing things you’ve (hopefully) learned over several years of residency, and if you’re like me, are looking for a no-frills, high-yield only book. There was a lot of space wasted on explaining very basic concepts, and I felt a lot of information was left out in the process. I instead went with the AAEM book and never looked back.

I find myself using the book more than any other text when I need information on an audiology topic. The entire book is meticulously edited: I may have found 1 typo in over 300 pages read. The chapters are written by leading experts on that topic. Not every audiology topic is covered, or with the same amount of detail. There is definitely a bias towards diagnostic rather than treatment and rehabilitative information. But for what it does cover, it covers in good detail and with authority. For the topics it doesn’t cover, there are other good texts to read. The prose in the vast majority of chapters is incredible readable, which is perhaps surprising for this type of reference book. There are lots of good figures, tables, diagrams, etc.
