The enthusiastic feedback received from readers of the international bestseller Schein’s Common Sense Emergency Abdominal Surgery (now in its 3rd edition, translated to seven languages; Springer Verlag; ISBN 9783540748205) inspired the editors to do a similar book dedicated to surgical complications: practical, non-formal, internationally relevant (in all types of practice and levels of hospitals) – and definitely not politically correct: what is considered taboo by others is not taboo for us; here we discuss everything!

Description

This text provides a person-centered approach to helping individuals with schizophrenia meet their personal goals. The approach is strongly influenced by the “recovery” model. This model emphasizes a respect for an individual’s ability to participate in decision-making about their illness and an appreciation that people can achieve many of their personal goals even when their illness is only partially controlled. There is also an emphasis on the diversity of individuals with schizophrenia. That is, although many people with this illness are severely disabled with limitations in their abilities to work or to function socially, others manage to function at a high level with successful careers and rich social and family relationships.

This is the standard “bible” for surgeons. When I trained, I used the 3rd edition so there is a lot of up to date information in this newest edition that includes molecular basis of many surgical diseases. This is a “must have” book for surgeons in training or as a reference book to keep up to date for practicing surgeons.

Description

Psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia fascinate and challenge mental health providers, who seek to understand these conditions and assist individuals and families who suffer from them. Schizophrenia causes significant disability and increased mortality, and practitioners struggle to identify and manage the condition appropriately. It can be particularly difficult for trainees and students to grasp the basics in a way that can effectively inform clinical care. Hopefully, this book will help. This volume of the Pittsburgh Pocket Psychiatry series provides a comprehensive overview of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders, which will assist psychiatry residents, medical students, and other professional trainees in diagnosing and treating individuals with these conditions. The book draws on the latest scientific research to discuss the neurobiology and pathophysiology of these illnesses; reviews the key clinical and diagnostic features of psychotic illnesses consistent with the revised criteria of DSM-5; discusses the course of these illnesses and their associated psychosocial issues; and provides strategies for treating individuals afflicted with these illnesses. It will help practitioners develop a better understanding of how to manage the challenges of evaluating, diagnosing, and treating individuals with psychotic illnesses. The handy, pocket-size format should make the book convenient and user-friendly, while the text itself is concise and readable, geared towards the young professional. Case examples, sample questions, and resource lists supplement core material and make this volume practical, particularly as a self-study guide. Contributing authors represent psychiatry, social work, and pharmacy; all have experience teaching and mentoring trainees and other health professionals

This book is a great handbook for students and interns. The chapters are organized by symptoms. Each chapter walks you through the differential and does a great job explaining the mechanisms that lead to the symptom. Each chapter then describes the workup of each symptom. Therefore, it is perfect for any situation where you are working up a patient from scratch, for example a new outpatient or ED visit. However, detailed management of specific diseases is weak, and I use The Harriet Lane Handbook: Mobile Medicine Series, Expert Consult: Online and Print for that.

Description

The occurrence of marine and freshwater toxins is a rapidly evolving problem due to ever-changing circumstances. Expanding international commerce is forcing cargo ships into virgin territory, deforestation and pollution violate the natural ecological balance, and a changing climate holds unknown potential to alter current factors and trigger toxic blooms in new forms, at new rates, and in new places. Fortunately, with notable advances in analysis technology, the body of knowledge in the field is equally dynamic. In just six years since the first edition, toxins that warranted only line listings, including pfiestra, gambierol, and polycavernoside, are now worthy of entire chapters, requiring a new edition to encompass the expanding scope of the field.

I love this little book. It was definitely pricy for it’s size, but has certainly come in handy for many assignments and will be great in clinical. I love how if gives both the expected and unexpected
