By adopting the systematic sequence and focus provided in this novel title, clinicians can offer a more modern physical examination, one that may prove more productive than the methods taught in the pre-imaging era.

Description

This guide provides practical information on the care of patients with blunt injuries that will be invaluable for emergency personnel, trauma surgeons, orthopaedic traumatologists, and anesthesiologists. The management of both truncal injuries (head, chest, abdomen) and fractures of the extremities, the pelvis, and the spine is covered in a condensed fashion, emphasizing key information. Care is taken to highlight associated injuries that may alter the decision making in patients with polytrauma. The new, revised edition takes full account of three major developments of recent years, namely the increasing economic pressure on health care systems, including trauma care, the changes in trauma systems and related education, and the improved survival of polytrauma patients. In view of the greater recognition of the physical and psychological long-term sequelae of major injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder is discussed in depth in this new edition.

One of the first books of its kind to explore the brain mechanisms involved in creating and interacting with our social environment. … A good companion to Ward’s popularA Student’s Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience … both recommended as introductory texts for undergraduate and postgraduate students because of their easy to read style, accompanying colour illustrations, definitions, as well as chapter summaries. – Karima Susi, Nottingham Trent University, UK, in The Psychologist

I’m an MS2 interested in trying to narrow down my search for which specialty I’d enjoy most. I haven’t seen the previous edition of this book, but from the reviews on the previous one, it sounds like this one is essentially the same. The book is great for starting to think about different specialties and offers good advice for things to consider when trying to choose. However, all of the short write-ups on each specialty are written by a specialist in the field who is really only focused on the pros of the field. I was hoping for a critical evaluation of the possible pros and cons of each field, but instead each description is very one-sided. It does offer good stats on boards scores, average salaries for each field, match rates, etc. Overall I think it’s a good reference, but it’s not as objective as I was hoping and I don’t feel like there were too many special nuggets of information that I might not hear about each field. I was hoping for a special inside view of the fields with tidbits that you don’t know until you are actually in the field. I think that because I just don’t know enough about choosing a specialty that it’s a good place to start, but it’s not quite what I was hoping for.

Description

This text provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art review of this field, and will serve as a valuable resource for clinicians, surgeons and researchers with an interest in early prostate cancer. The book reviews new data about genetic markers, transperineal mapping biopsy and mpMRI, how to apply each of these technologies in patients with elevated PSA, when a prior prostate biopsy performed by the standard TRUS method is negative and in cases where low risk disease is already diagnosed, how to differentiate those men who might harbor more aggressive disease from those who do not. Over 75% of newly diagnosed prostate cancer meets the criteria for low risk disease which has created a dilemma for both patients and clinicians. Active surveillance programs have been initiated and are reviewed. How the new technologies impact surveillance programs is addressed. Clinical stage designation is updated and a new intra-prostatic staging system is discussed. Prostate biopsy techniques utilizing transrectal ultrasound, transperineal mapping, elastography and mpMRI are compared. Finally, utilization of this new technology in the application of focal therapy is reviewed.

Description

It has been nearly a half-century since the inaugural edition of The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice, and the book’s status as a classic was again validated with the second edition a decade ago. This new, third edition maintains the book’s reputation with thoroughly updated content that reflects changes brought about by the publication of DSM-5. The book presents the psychiatric interview in the context of the enormous and ongoing progress that has been made in biological and descriptive psychiatry. In addition, the book emphasizes the shift in the social relationship between patient and clinician, recognizing that the therapeutic alliance has become the foundation of all medical treatment efforts and that patients are now better informed and seek active involvement in treatment decisions. The text reflects this growing equality and supports the clinician’s efforts to nurture the relationship for optimum therapeutic outcomes. The chapter on the traumatized patient has been completely updated for this edition, and a chapter on the patient with dissociative identity disorder has been added. Clinicians familiar with the previous edition will be pleased that its commonsense, easy to-use structure has been retained even as its content has been thoroughly revised. The Psychiatric Interview in Clinical Practice will benefit mental health clinicians, both seasoned and in training, ensuring that their skills are current and their knowledge cutting-edge.
