The first few chapters focus on embryology and anatomy of the interatrial septum, radiographic anatomy of the atria, indications, contraindications, and equipment for transseptal catheterization. Subsequent chapters provide detailed discussions about various methods, illustrations of challenging cases, complications, and new technologies. The last few chapters cover transseptal techniques in pediatric cardiology, emerging applications in interventional cardiology, and left atrial appendage closure. Numerous figures and illustrations of fluoroscopic images and echocardiograms are easy to understand and concepts are nicely detailed. Flow charts for the important steps and precautions for transseptal interventions as well as schematic representation of these procedures are very easy to follow. The comparative images of fluoroscopy, cardiac CT, and different modalities of echocardiograms help clarify the concepts of atrial anatomy pertinent to transseptal catheterization and the steps in interventions. Tabulated forms of trouble-shooting problems, causes, and solutions are very helpful without going through the text. –Doody (July, 2011)

The updated third edition of “Traumatic Brain Injury: Methods for Clinical and Forensic Neuropsychiatric Assessment” from Robert P. Granacher, Jr., MD, MBA, is a timely and masterful contribution to the field of brain injury. Dr. Granacher is a professor of psychiatry at the University of Kentucky, and a pioneering, (Harvard) fellowship trained, behavioral neurologist/neuropsychiatrist. He brings his almost 40 years of experience as a practitioner, scientist, teacher, and forensic neuropsychiatrist to this book.

Dr. Grancher succinctly covers the rapidly accumulating data from the civilian and military research, including on vital issues such as suicide, violence, disability, and pain in the brain injured. The book will greatly benefit practicing psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists, rehab medicine doctors, and others involved in the assessment and management of the brain injured; a must have for forensic psychiatrists and psychologists, and a useful reference for the legal profession.

Chapter 1 provides the reader with an understanding of the pathophysiology of brain injury in a clear manner that will be useful for educating judges and juries. Chapter 6 (Neurocognitive Assessment) educates the reader on an area that is critical in brain injury assessment but one that is anxiety provoking for non-neuropsychologists. Chapters 8, 9 and 10 are superbly presented and of practical benefit for conducting exams, making decisions, and providing opinions in this very complicated area that involves medical science, law, and public health.

Every important area of brain injury for the evaluating clinician and forensic practitioner has been addressed and is accessible from the contents and index, and the search in the Kindle/ebook version. Controversial areas such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy and brain imaging have been covered in an up to date and balanced manner that separates relevance from rhetoric and the science from the pseudoscience.

Scholarly but readable with up to date references, it is a book you will want to carry to exams and court. There are many books on brain injury and forensic psychiatry but none that cover both with the breadth, depth, and practicality as this book does. Dr. Granacher’s book will be an invaluable resource to guide those not familiar with doing med-legal examinations on brain injury cases, and for the experienced forensic psychiatrist to update and maintain thoroughness while conducting evaluations and providing testimony.

Description

Therapeutic hypothermia has emerged as a very important treatment option for patients with cardiac arrest as it provides significant protection from developing neurologic injury once the patient has been successfully resuscitated. Studies have demonstrated over 15% absolute risk reduction in death and neurologic injury using this therapy. Although hospitals and medical centers have become familiar with this important intervention it still remains greatly under utilized due to an experience and lack of resources to safely and effectively deploy such a program. The objective of this book is to educate and familiarize both providers and institutions as to how to develop and deploy and provide therapeutic hypothermia to their patients. The current knowledge for this is provided by speakers and national experts and also by literature review. There are several courses being provided on this as well throughout the US. These are good venues for people to come and see and get hands on experience, but there still needs to be a concrete book with references on how to go about getting this program started.
