Description

Cushing´s syndrome is a relatively rare clinical disorder that is associated with many co-morbidities such as systemic hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, impaired immune function and growth impairment in children, all of which severely reduce quality of life and life expectancy. Cushing’s Syndrome: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment reviews the difficulties in distinguishing Cushing’s syndrome from these and other common conditions, such as central obesity, menstrual irregularity and depression. It also provides state-of-the-art information on various strategies to establish the diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome and the differential diagnosis among its diverse etiologies, as well as therapeutic approaches. Additionally, a range of conditions that represent challenges for the diagnosis and treatment–such as renal failure, pediatric age, cyclic hypercortisolism, and pregnancy–are covered in detail. A valuable resource not only for endocrinologists but also internal medicine physicians, gynecologists, pediatricians, , pituitary surgeons and urologists, Cushing’s Syndrome: Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and Treatment provides insights by experts that will help all physicians dealing with Cushing´s syndrome to expand their knowledge about the condition and provide targeted, comprehensive care.

I am a student paramedic in my last year and have been introduced to the world of pharmacology. I need to know how the paramedic drugs work and this is the book for the job. It obviously doesn’t focus on paramedic science as its a broad overview of many common drugs but it’s working for my revision. It has a brief overview of the system in focus before it goes into detail. Clear objectives are stated in the introduction of each chapter and I am meeting those as I work through the book. I have googled a few words I am not sure about as it assumes you know some of the basics but overall I’ve recommended it to all of my colleagues and carry it to work with me every shift for a chance that I will get a minute to read a chapter.

The layout is exceptional. The print is clear and easily read, with well defined headings and subheadings. Tables and diagrams are uniformly excellent, with information and concepts easy to grasp for even tired eyes…this is an excellent volume, the best of its genre for medical students and those needing an enjoyable crash course in gynaecology. Reasonably priced and highly recommended. Alan B Hughes, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery

Description

The world of medical training moves on and, to reflect these changes, a new edition of this Crash Course has been developed. The traditional House Officer year is now a two-year Foundation programme with an expanded syllabus and exposure to many more specialties. Fundamentally, however, the challenges remain the same – working in new environments, collaborating with new colleagues and facing up to new clinical responsibilities. This new edition of the ‘survival guide’ continues to provide the support and advice of its predecessor. To reflect the recent changes, there is a new chapter on the Foundation years as well as updated chapters on medical and surgical emergencies to incorporate current guidelines, and an enhanced chapter on ECG interpretation. This book should help you survive the occasional stormy voyage through the Foundation years and enable you to keep things in perspective.

Handbooks seem to be popular with publishers presumably because they are inexpensive to publish. But is this book really a useful addition to the market? As a renal registrar the information in this book is already available in a myriad other places ranging from uptodate, to any standard renal text. I would say the oxford handbook of nephrology and hypertension is a better resource overall even for the non-specialist. The hypertension section in that is pretty detailed. This new book has a good section on major clinical trials of anti-hypertensive agents which is mildly useful. Perhaps the book will get better with a few new editions but currently it hasn’t really added anything for me. Thus if you only had £30 to spend you would be far better off getting the oxford handbook of hypertension and nephrology.

Description

Understanding the influence and interaction between physical activity and the endocrine system are of paramount importance in dealing with a multitude of health problems. In Endocrinology of Physical Activity and Sport, renowned physicians and researchers provide a comprehensive and expanded update on the scientific, clinical and practical components of endocrinology as related to sport and exercise. The authors thoroughly review what is known about how such activity effects the endocrine system and how in turn these hormonal responses affect many other organs and systems of the body. In addition, aspects of endocrinology in non-glandular tissue which have endocrine actions are addressed; for example, adipocytes and the release of leptin and related adipocytokines. Further, a wide range of clinically related topics such as athletic amenorrhea, osteopenia, sarcopenia, and hypogonadism are included. This new edition critically integrates what is known about the complex interaction of the endocrine system in the sports context and will again prove immensely valuable to all physicians and clinical investigators treating those active in sports today.

Links biochemistry topics to medicine. I have been reading this along with lippincotts biochemistry for my undergraduate class. I find lippincotts to be very interesting and high yield, while this book links the topics and teaches them in a way that engages your intellectual side. Each case files series presents a case, which are normally about a page. They then ask key questions to get you thinking. They then have key topic definitions. They then teach the material. And last each case has questions to test the knowledge you just learned. This book has helped me show off on a couple of my exams, which is what all of those premed gunners are looking for ;). I would reccomend this and lippincotts biochem for every undergrad course.
