Nicely presented in a sturdy box with a lift off lid, these cards have a hole if you wish to put them on a ring for revision. Separate sections such as Thorax are divided by taller card dividers which fit nicely within the provided box, allowing a whole section to be lifted out for study or revision with ease. These cards have the familiar well printed Netter diagrams, labelled with numbers which are explained on the reverse along with commentary on the region in question and clinical notes such as pulse points. I cannot comment on the technical value of these as these were for my son, but they look fine to me. Nomenclature is English, not Latin.

I love the Oxford Handbooks. I work in the NHS and this handbook is indispensable. There’s something very reassuring about having an Oxford Handbook by your side in a new job. It’s a really well-written book, covers all the major topics in paediatrics with sensible chapters including for emergencies. It’s great for foundation and paediatric trainees alike.

Description

Urology at a Glance is a concise, practical guide to diagnostic and therapeutic decision making. The book is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the pathway from symptom to diagnosis and covers the full range of symptoms commonly encountered by the urologist. Any particular symptom can be located within a matter of seconds and in each case differential diagnosis is explained with the aid of a flow chart. The second part of the book is devoted to the pathway from diagnosis to therapy, with each short chapter devoted to a specific diagnosis. Basic information is provided on the disease in question, along with an outline of state of the art treatment options and possible complications. Again, flow charts are used to help the reader to reach the correct therapeutic decision in different circumstances. Numerous high-definition photographs and illustrations are also included. This book will be a great asset for urologists and practitioners in related disciplines.

I used this book as an MS-2 to supplement course work, as my sole text for the NBME Pharmacology Shelf and sole text for Step 1 pharmacology. Even as an MS-3 I do not leave home without this book so you can look forward to knowing that this book will continue to serve you well in the wards. Indeed, it presents a lot of material but in outline format and I found that I only really needed to highlight a fraction of the book to really master pharmacology for the MS-II year, shelf, and Step. However, even as an MS-3, I continue to add highlights and annotations to the book and even further refine my knowledge in pharmacotherapy. My pharm shelf exam, which is taken as MS-2, was tied for the highest in my class and I have always attributed that to the excellent layout of the book and subsequently, the ability to quickly get through it over and over again once you have performed a first pass highlight through all the chapters. Buy this book, cherish it, and it will not let you down. It also has vignette and short style qs, 10-20 qs at end of chapters and an 80 q cumulative test at the end of the book, another asset of the book.

This fourth edition of crash course in paediatrics is now fuly revised and updated with the current guidelines for best practice, and recent developments in medical research and pharmacology…Who will find this book useful? The primary readership should be students in their medical undergraduate years, but will also prove invaluable for foundation trainees or any paediatric speciality doctors. But I believe that the beauty of this book is not only the facts, but also the way how authors present in a user friendly outline. It may by much more important for us, senior doctors in all paediatric specialities, and we should learn this way of gret organization to guide and teach our junior doctors.

“Although this book is intended for surgical residents (and some may find it useful), it is most appropriate for third- and fourth-year medical students (such as those doing sub-internships). It would be a valuable addition to other books that are standard for this demographic (e.g., Surgical Recall, 6th edition, Blackbourne (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2012).” (Doody’s, 21 March 2014)

Description

This practical guide provides an instruction manual for common, essential ward-based practical procedures. The book is aimed at those in their foundation years, as well as being useful for those starting their subsequent specialist training years. Many of these procedures are not taught at medical school, yet are expected to be routinely implemented as a junior doctor. Furthermore, the competency-based assessment structure being implemented as part of the ‘Modernising Medical Careers’ programme has highlighted and defined the need for professional guidance and teaching with such procedures. The book covers all major ward-based practical procedures (including all of those covered in the Foundation Programme syllabus), with chapters for related procedures being grouped under relevant sections. Each chapter is set out under a standard set of headings, including the indications for the procedure, the anatomy underlying the procedure, details of how to perform the procedures, post-procedure care, potential complications and their management, and relevant investigations. The style is concise and to the point in the form of a quick reference guide, and the methodology reads as if performing the procedure in person on the ward. Numerous clinical photographs and diagrams complement the text at key steps of the procedure. Every chapter has a number of helpful ‘Tips’ boxes providing practical advice and experience in an easy-to-read manner. Current recommendations are included from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), together with procedural guidelines issued by the British Thoracic Society (BTS) and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG).

Reviews

It covers probably 75-80% of what you might need for the FM shelf, but some of the sections just aren’t detailed enough. The questions are the best part of the book.

This is a companion resource to the popular Gray’s Anatomy for Students. It in you will find accurate and clear depictions of the anatomy of eight regions of our bodies. This extensive and intensive atlas of over 600 pages provides detailed full-color drawings of anatomical structures, and images obtained through computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) technologies. Many of the CT images were taken with contrast, so they present the anatomy in question much more clearly than would be possible in simple CT depictions. Gray’s Atlas of Anatomy, second edition is an excellent resource for students and teachers of human anatomy. The fact that so much additional information is available and interaction is possible online makes it a truly outstanding, highly valuable product. ~Nano Khilnani
