Description

Sleep disorders exact a high toll on society in terms of diminished quality of life, reduced productivity and cost to medical services. This book guides the reader through the basic science of sleep and how to evaluate individuals suffering from sleep irregularities. Complex features of sleep disorders are then discussed, including parasomnias, sleep apnea, night terrors and restless legs syndrome. The book also looks at how these sleep abnormalities can affect individuals with other psychiatric disorders such as epilepsy, depression and anxiety disorders. Covering disorders from insomnia to narcolepsy, and specialty areas from pediatric to geriatric, this wide ranging and accessible guide allows non-sleep specialists to approach and understand important information that is clinically relevant in everyday practice. Illustrated with summary tables, figures and treatment algorithms, this book will be a useful guide for neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, pulmonologists and internists as well as health care professionals in training.

Reviews

The disadvantages of this title are that I would have liked to have seen summaries of the key points at the end of each chapter within the print, though this is not essential as should you wish them, they are in part included in the online extras which have both questions & a few notes available for you to utilise.

The third edition of this trusted quick-reference guide has everything you need to keep pace with this fast-moving field―presented in the acclaimed CURRENT format. A practical reference for primary care providers, the book simplifies the treatment of difficult-to-manage rheumatologic diseases and disorders, such as arthritis, lupus, and sarcoidosis.

Reviews

I neglected this book during my neuroscience class in favor of another title, but I just realized how much better this book is. The new edition is lightyears ahead of the prior and has a boat load of questions. Of the other “review” style books, this is my favorite for explanations and great illustrations.

Description

BRS Microbiology and Immunology is a popular volume in the Board Review Series for medical students. Written in a concise, readable outline format, this book is intended to cover topics most commonly tested on USMLE. Included are 300 to 500 review questions in the USMLE-style format, and a comprehensive examination.

Reviews

This book is broken down into 6 sections: 1) Anatomy, histology & embryology, 2) Biochemistry & genetics, 3) Physiology, 4) Pharmacology, 5) Pathology, and 6) Neurosciences. It does give a nice survey of the types of questions asked on medical basic sciences exams (at least the multiple choice questions are, int he US open-ended and true/false questions are rather rare), the questions are written well and have great accompanying images. Each section contains 2 exams and each exam has 30 questions. Explanations of the answers are given, but some are more complete than others; some explanations will only explain a narrow part of the question which might be frustrating for some learners. Some questions refer to other books published by the company, which is helpful if you happen to have those books but it would be expensive and might not be useful for those with limited resources.

Following the familiar easy-to-use at a Glance format, each topic is presented as a double-page spread with key facts accompanied by clear tables, illustrations and diagrams encapsulating all the students need to know.

Reviews

I think this is a great pathology review book. Although the explanations to the questions are not as in depth as Robbin’s review question book, the thing that separates this book from Robbins is the amount of pictures it has. One of my biggest weaknesses is histology pictures, and this book definitely has plenty. Overall, A great resource to use throughout medical school.
