Dr. Marios Loukas was appointed Chairman of the Department of Anatomical Sciences at St. Georges University Medical School in 2008. He is responsible for managing the anatomy department, developing curriculum, supervising research and inspiring scholarly activities. Under his guidance, the department publishes approximately 70 to 80 academic papers a year. In addition, Dr. Loukas is the University’s Dean of Research and Assistant Dean of Basic and Allied Health Sciences. Prior to joining SGU, Dr. Loukas taught anatomy, histology, and radiology at Harvard Medical School’s Department of Education and Development for seven years. He also taught anatomy at the American University of the Caribbean and was Course Director and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy for one year. The Davis Drug Guide will always be my go to for IN-DEPTH med info, but so far, I am liking the Mosby’s Pharm NoteCards. I am a nursing student and I’m using this to cement the information I learned in my nursing previous nursing courses and most recently taken pharmacology course (being that it was a 6-week summer course, we did not have enough time to go as in depth as I would have liked). Book is nicely sized to carry with you when you feel like studying on a whim, not sure you’d like in in your pocket at clinical though, nor is it easy to flip through. I do wish the specific medications were highlighted or bold, since they do tend to blend into the page (example: anti-hypertensives on information page; see picture #4) but I do like how it is specific to nursing care for a patient on these drugs. The cartoon drawings help, but sometimes they have little tid-bits that are there merely for humor. Don’t waste my brain space! haha Nursing student problems 🙂 It bugged me that no one had posted a picture of the book itself, so this is basically my motivation for the review. I will possibly update after the summer once I have had a solid chance to really read through it. Hope this helps!

Doody Rating : 3 stars :There is a large influx of trauma, general surgical, pediatric, neurosurgical and obstetric emergencies as the hospital is one of the major public hospitals located in a densely populated region sitting amidst major routes in the city. It also provides services for emergency cardiovascular, cerebrovascular interventions and cadaver transplants. Daily lessons from this tremendous emergency work inspired us to bring out this book. There is plethora of reference material available in basic sciences related to anesthesiology, namely physiology, pharmacology, physics and anatomy. Similarly, a large number of textbooks are on techniques such as general, regional, monitored anesthesia care as well as super specialties like cardiac, neurosurgical and pediatric anesthesia, etc. But there is a limited availability of books and references for emergency anesthesia. One has to scan and integrate parts from various sources. This book is an attempt to assimilate the scattered information and add clinical expertise. Contents of this book have been divided into nine sections to cover majority of the emergencies. General considerations for adults, obstetric and pediatric sections have been written separately to avoid duplication. An additional challenge is cases with various medical disorders for emergency surgeries. Efforts have been taken to accommodate them in first section and obstetric section. The contributors of this book work together at LTMMC and LTMGH and have a well-balanced team with fresh talent bringing the latest technological knowledge and tenured practitioners supplementing it with applied experience. Part of the team worked on collection of the matter from different sources for an ideal scenario, while the senior faculty members used their vast clinical experience for a more practical and realistic application. These combined efforts have been truly beneficial to achieve our goal to rationally mix latest technology with clinical experience and identify potential ways to conduct anesthesia with best results, at least costs and minimum risk.
This book is a great reference for specific patient care considerations, written by a PTA for PTAs. It is well organized and presents concepts with practical examples and scenarios. The topics are covered in detail with plenty of easy-to-read bullet-point boxes and charts. The attention to patient safety and promotion of the PT/PTA team is prominent throughout. This book is a blend of adequately referenced best practices and anecdotal experiences, which is valuable to students as a base knowledge reference.
