Description

This book documents the long, still ongoing battle between the US Food and Drug Administration and the dietary supplement industry. It presents the complex, often subtle, and sometimes overlooked series of events that had a major impact on how dietary supplements are manufactured, marketed, sold, and used today. While the first few chapters focus on some background topics, the remaining chapters walk the reader through timeline of events, legislative actions, FDA proposed and final rules, and judicial decisions that led to our current dietary supplement regulatory framework. Interwoven in narrative are examples of the roles of science, social and public policy, politics, and popular media.

Reviews

The text is very readable, clear and well crafted and pitched at the level which a clinician would appreciate. The layout is logical and the depth is detailed and yet understandable. This would make a good reference source for a wide range of health care professionals which could span both primary and secondary care.
really good
This book is relevant for any delivering provider in labor and delivery and would be suitable for residents and physicians in obstetrics and for midwives. This book might benefit from a deeper dive into the actual performance of these techniques.” (Barbara Hoffman, Doody’s Book Reviews, May 1, 2020)

Description

Take an engaging approach to real-world problems with the only book of its kind written for physical therapists. This groundbreaking text breaks new ground again. It’s now three books in one…a comprehensive exploration of ethics as well as of professionalism and cultural diversity. The thoroughly revised, updated, and expanded 2nd Edition offers physical therapists the tools they need as they confront the ethical dilemmas and moral controversies that they will encounter in professional practice. At the same time, it stimulates reflection on the moral significance of a therapist’s work, a neglected area of study. Stories drawn from real-life cases identify and define a broad range of ethical problems, and show readers how to resolve them. An emphasis on day-to-day issues makes ethical and philosophical concepts easy to understand. Each chapter begins with selected principles from the APTA’s Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct. New cases studies, new illustrations, and expanded discussions of ethical issues make the 2nd Edition even more essential.

Review “This book is a brave attempt, by well-known and respected clinicians. The time and work involved in producing this volume, added to by the frustration of daily working, family life and publisher pressure, have produced a worthy product. Should this publication get to a second edition, the experience and lessons learned will allow for a more compact and informative work.” (P J Bradley, The Journal of Laryngology & Otology, Vol. 133 (8), 2019)

The audience includes primary care physicians, nurses, medical students, and medical residents. … Primary care professionals may enjoy the general overview of the hundreds of common skin disorders.” (Patricia Wong, Doody’s Book Reviews, April, 2019) From the Back Cover This book summarises the key clinical features and their treatment across a range of skin diseases and describes the decision-making process when referring patients to specialists. This book takes the major pathologies commonly studied in general surgery and presents them in a unique format based upon algorithms. The algorithms begin with the clinical presentation of the patient and work their way through the various diagnostic modalities available to the surgeon. This allows the physician to make a decision regarding treatment options based upon various patterns in the algorithms. This text serves as a very useful resource for surgeons as it allows complex clinical pathways to be conveniently organized in logical algorithms while providing a concise yet comprehensive manual to assist in clinical decision making. The algorithms were created by recognized experts in their field and include the most up-to-date clinical and evidence-based information.Clinical Algorithms in General Surgery: A Practical Guide provides a useful resource for surgeons in clinical practice, as well as surgical residents in training and those who are preparing for board examinations or recertification. –This text refers to the hardcover edition. Reviews

This is a concise, yet comprehensive, well organized (84 chapters in 9 major subcategories of Pharmacology) text, with an abundance of excellent graphics and text boxes, which flows with a rhythmic consistency from chapter to chapter. It is well balanced in that has all the primary details intertwining both mechanistic and clinical indications for different drug classes, with a “New Developments” section for each chapter. While the first section covers all the essential information needed to understand the principles of pharmacotherapy, each chapter also has a specific section applying these principles for each drug class. The subdivision of different systemic targets and therapeutic aims: autonomic/voluntary nervous, central nervous, pain, inflammation, cardiovascular, endocrine, chemotherapy, and special considerations provides excellent coverage of the use of drugs to treat disease. Also, handy tabular listings of abbreviations and both the generic and proprietary names of the major drugs in each chapter is provided along with sections on clinical relevance, self-assessment questions, plus additional resources for the topics in each chapter. There is also extensive cross-referencing between chapters to minimize redundancy. The inclusion of a chapter (73) on dietary supplements “The Role of Nutraceuticals and Natural Products” is an important and valuable addition in view of their widespread use and mistaken views that they are harmless because they are not considered to be drugs. Of special note is the inclusion of a new chapter on cannabinoids that includes consideration of their analgesic properties in addition to describing the use of cannabidiol as an antiseizure medication.

Reviews

The book is a nice reference for emergency medicine, internal medicine, and family medicine physicians. In addition, the book would serve as a basic, yet comprehensive review for rotating medical students on a variety of rotations because it reviews differential diagnoses, laboratory and imaging examinations, as well as relevant history and physical examination skills. This text may serve as a comprehensive review for the anesthesia provider looking to review some of the basics of cardiopulmonary diagnosis. (Adam C. Adler, Anesthesia & Analgesia, Vol. 130 (5), May, 2020)
