Description

This book focuses on the emerging non-invasive imaging technique of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Ophthalmoscopy (FLIO). FLIO reveals unique information on retinal diseases, ranging from age-related macular degeneration and vascular diseases to hereditary retinal dystrophies. Fluorescence lifetimes enable the evaluation of disease progression before irreversible structural changes occur. The image acquisition is suitable for diagnostic purposes and follow-up examinations to investigate the natural course of disease, and to monitor the effects of possible therapies.

This book provides a concise and up-to-date resource on common shoulder disorders. The reader will learn about various shoulder conditions, their presentation, evaluation and management. Anatomy, biomechanics, function, clinical history taking and examination, radiological imaging and other investigations, as well as principles of non-surgical and surgical management of the troublesome shoulder are presented first. The Shoulder Made Easy conveys clear, easily understood information to help practitioners in day-to-day clinical practice as well as in preparation for undergraduate or postgraduate exams. The book focuses on:Commonly encountered clinical symptoms of the shoulder: patients don’t present with a clinical diagnosis but with symptoms such as pain, stiffness, weakness or instability and a thorough consideration of what could be accounting for such symptoms and how such symptoms may be dealt with is presented.Commonly encountered clinical disorders of the shoulder: each clinical disorder is concisely presented with the background, clinical symptoms, investigations, differential diagnosis, treatment and a further reading section. This book attempts to present information in an easily read, succinct way. In particular, this book tries to unpick and explain those concepts of shoulder disorders that may be difficult to understand. An attempt is made to pass on knowledge but more importantly also stimulate lateral thinking. Description

The complex healthcare needs of pregnant patients, where care is tailored to not one but two patients, pose specific challenges to anesthesiologists. This book provides concise, case-based discussion on the clinical scenarios and challenges faced in the provision of anesthesia and pain relief for expectant mothers. In the style of problem-based learning, each case is presented as a short scenario, followed by discussion of the causes, risk factors, management and controversies involved. The textbook features a wide range of cases, from common clinical scenarios that are experienced in day-to-day practice to the rare but significant pathologies less familiar to most clinicians. With a global base of contributors, the book is relevant to practice across the world. The concise format supports both trainee anesthesiologists in their initial experiences of obstetrics and exam preparation, and experienced clinicians in need of a reliable, quick-reference text.

“This is the third edition of a well-established handbook covering the main topics in pediatric urology that was first published in 1997 and last updated in 2005.

The purpose is to provide an easy to carry, basic reference in pediatric urology. This book has been well received in the past and it has become expected reading for those rotating on the pediatric urology service. The third edition is a significant improvement over the previous one. It is shorter and easier to read and the images are in color. The online version is very straightforward and easy to use. This book accomplishes its objectives well.

The audience includes individuals rotating through a pediatric urology service: residents, medical students, and nurses, as well as those working in acute care settings such as emergency departments, urgent care and primary care practices (advanced nurse practitioners and physician assistants), when quick access to pediatric urologic information is needed. This book certainly meets the needs of the intended audience. All of the authors and the contributors are experienced, recognized experts in the field.

The book covers topics such as circumcision, hypospadias, undescended testes, abnormalities of sexual differentiation, etc. The 34 chapters are written in a concise and informative manner and all have “Recommended Readings” consisting of a few references. New chapters cover transitional urology, adolescent urology, and pediatric and adolescent gynecology, all which represent the more modern approach. The book is well organized in a sequence that appears to follow the likelihood of presentation of a given condition, starting with circumcision, then hypospadias, and ending with transitional urology. The chapters are well written, clear, and concise. The last chapter, Pediatric Urology Database, is comprehensive and worth having at hand. The only shortcoming is the review of priapism, as it does not include current pharmacological treatment of this condition, or a clear algorithm for this urological emergency.

This is a much enhanced edition of a very popular and established handbook in pediatric urology. The ability to access the information in an electronic fashion makes this a must-have for any person interested in this field.”

Description

This book provides the basis needed for a dialogue between intensivists and emergency surgeons regarding the management and monitoring of acute care surgery (ACS) patients who require Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission. It puts forward a practical approach to the treatment of common emergencies in daily clinical practice, and shares essential information on the treatment and monitoring of hemodynamic, respiratory, metabolic and neurological problems related to acute surgical patients requiring ICU admission. Furthermore, it includes two chapters regarding diagnostic and interventional radiology (fundamentals in daily emergency clinical practice), and addresses important issues such as ethics, mass casualty care, and care in low-resource settings. As such, the book not only offers a valuable guide for all practicing surgeons and intensivists, but is also relevant for residents and fellows who are newcomers to ACS.

This book is so amazing to have when you’re on the wards. As a medical student, it has been invaluable to me being on the medicine wards. It has so much information in it, especially the specifics. For instance, you may know generally what the treatment is for something, but the exact dosing and whatnot are clearly written out for you in this book. It’ll make you look like a superstar with your attendings. It’s also a great conversation piece because many of the attendings and residents will recall using the same book and talk about how great it is. It’s definitely saved me quite a few times and I highly recommend this!
