Description

The third edition continues to build on the extremely successful art program and the ‘Understanding’ feature and has an even more robust electronic support ancillary program to make both faculty and student learning easier and more successful.

Reviews

Seriously speaking, if you’re interested in becoming a pathophysiologist, then this is the book for you. It’s a well-written book. However, it sometimes lacks clarity, and it’s verbose. That said, I was quite pleased with its content and thoroughness. I’m not one for a clunky, unwieldy magnum opus, often made up of 1,000+ pages. I opted for this book because of its online availability, using an access code. Note well: The e-search feature, on which I’m often dependent, is nonfunctional. I’m also dependent on an e-highlighting tool. Again, worthless. I contacted customer support, and this is what they said: ” … I apologize, but a persistent highlighting feature isn’t included on our website. [even though I PAID for it] VitalSource, a company that provides some of our books on their website, has a permanent highlighting system, but you would have to get access to the book on their site. If you have any additional questions … ” In other words, the producers of this book, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, have essentially passed the buck onto a company called VitalSource. Either that, or the customer service rep couldn’t be bothered. Either way, if you’re willing to put up with these inconveniences, then the content of “Essentials of Pathophysiology” is more than adequate, but if I buy a Cadillac without a heater or speedometer, the car still gets me from point A to point B, but the journey can be unnerving. Author Carol Porth, RN, MSN, PhD needs to focus on clarity. For a neophyte, the concepts are arcane as it is. Why confound the issue with superlative (sometimes useless) information? The reader is then left to decipher what is TRULY important (and make no mistake about it, what is important is indeed covered) from what is essentially … and with due respect … trivia, which is just enough to confuse rather than clarify. Everyone is a Hemingway wannabe. This book is 1,280 pages. Are these authors engaged in some unwitting contest to see who can write the most cumbersome, wordy, overwrought tome on the planet? “The Chinese have but one rule for writing – be clear.”

a reference text book is read differently. You want tyo look up something. you browse the table of contents., or you look at the index. Generally you will find several options that appear to be what you are looking for. Then you go to the appropriate page numbers in some form of sequential manner untill you find what interests you. Sometime what you are lokking for is spread over sveral chapters. Bottom line is you navigate the book- how should I say -non linearly or non sequentially.

I wanted to get detailed information to better understand a medical problem I have. As an engineer I’m used to reading technical books to build or expand knowledge. After researching different options, this seemed the best bet, and the fact it came with an online version was the final data point I needed. The book and the level of details as well as images and illustrations is outstanding. The text is detailed and easy to understand. The illustrations and images are of high quality and make it easier to get the point. Some of the MRI images are better than the ones I have of myself. The book is logically organized and it’s easy to use its taxonomy to find whatever you’re seeking. It is an amazing source of knowledge! It was easy to create an online account and download a copy of the book as well as available videos to my iPhone X and iPad. Amazon had this book and I got it in two days. I’m delighted with the book and Amazon. It is worth the price. If you are debating a new vs. used copy, consider that the new book version comes with the online access code that lets you download this very big and heavy book. The soft copy has videos and is very easy to use. The books itself is great for sitting at a desk and reading while looking at the images.

Reviews

I am a urologist with 18 years of practice experience. I love to read about my urological field with textbooks and meeting experiences. I can say I have found that for a good, precise, well written procedure protocol I have found this edition of Hinman’s superb. To read discussions on new techniques or to review less experienced procedures I have found this text to be more accommodating and useful than even the Campbells newest edition. The photography and illustrations here are more than intuitive to understand and to recall when needed. Well indexed for quick retrieval and well referenced to expand your understanding. A great use for your CME funds in my humble opinion.
