Description

The replacement of the single tooth with a dental implant is one of the most common clinical situations practitioners face on a daily basis. While in the past sockets were left untouched for months after tooth extraction before attending to the residual ridge, today it is possible to perform one surgery, one time, which is a huge benefit to both the patient and clinician alike. Written by two world-class masters, this book begins with a discussion of the history and rationale for anterior and posterior single-tooth implants, and then it walks the reader through the three types of sockets-type 1, type 2, and type 3-and their various indications and limitations. An entire chapter is devoted to clinical management of posterior teeth, followed by a chapter on cementation and impression-making techniques and complications. The final chapter is a clinical case appendix detailing 11 cases of single-tooth replacement in all types of sockets previously described. The protocols showcased in this book will make patient care faster, easier, simpler, more predictable, and, in many cases, less costly. 1,117 illustrations Contents 1. History and Rationale for Anterior and Posterior Single-Tooth Implants 2. Management of Type 1 Extraction Sockets 3. Management of Type 2 Extraction Sockets 4. Management of Type 3 Extraction Sockets 5. Clinical Management of Posterior Teeth 6. Important Considerations in Implant Dentistry 7. Clinical Case Appendix

Description

This book discusses and explains the importance of biochemistry knowledge in understanding what happens to patients during anesthesia and/or to those being in intensive care. It covers a wide range of topics, such as Cerebral Edema, Shock, Blood-Brain Barrier, The Pulmonary surfactant, The Acid – Base equilibrium, Local anaesthetics, Perineural adjuvants, Normobaric Oxygen Therapy, Theories of Narcosis. Hyperventilation effects and consequences are also presented. For instance, by hyperventilating a patient with a PaCO2 significantly below 25 mmHg, we risk blocking pyruvic acid carboxylation and transforming it into oxalacetic acid, which in turn knocks out the Krebs cycle, possibly leading to a complication, i.e. to metabolic acidosis and not to compensation for respiratory alkalosis. It is also worth remembering that vitamins are actually molecules of pretty considerable potency and should not be simply intended as integrators. If we inject a patient under intensive care with vitamin C, this not only plays a capillary-protective role but facilitates the conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline. As far as vitamin B6 goes, not only is it the most natural of antiemetics but the coenzyme responsible for transforming glutamate as one of the most powerful excitatory mediators into GABA, one of the fiercest inhibitors. Anesthesiological and intensive care practice require a detailed biochemistry knowledge to avoid onset of complications and/or to deal with unexpected events promptly and appropriately.

Chinese medical students are the primary focus, but equally important are the overseas students and experienced clinicians who wish to bridge the gap in bilingual medical education. … As the stated goal was to produce ‘the very first textbook that paves the way for all basic training essential for medical students’ the authors and contributors have produced an exceptionally well organized and presented book upon which many future books may be built. Description

Nanomedicine for Ischemic Cardiomyopathy: Progress, Opportunities, and Challenges provides an overview on the recent advances in diagnostic and treatment of ischemic cardiomyopathy diseases including myocardial infarction. Shortcomings of the current methods and how nanomedicine can address those obstacles in the field are discussed including the limitations of newly developed cell therapy approaches to clinical translation and how nanomedicine may overcome crucial issues and facilitate the successful and efficient clinical translation of cell therapy. Biomolecular therapy is also explored as another powerful approach for regeneration of heart tissue including available methods and systematic delivery of biomolecules using nanocarriers to the injured part of myocardium through active targeting. Finally, coverage of major tissue engineering advances for myocardial regeneration, including use of epicardial nanostructured patches for regeneration of injured epicardium and the highly conductive patches for enhancing cross talks between the cardiomyocytes, is explored. This concise, yet rigorous coverage, of the field of cardiac nanotechnology outlines the innovative and necessary role of nanomedicine in regenerative medicine for cardiac repair allowing researchers, clinicians, and nanotechnologists to examine the strengths and limitations of current findings and predict future trends to advance the applications of nanotechnology in cardiovascular biomedical research.

It goes beyond the ventilator itself to discuss strategies for severe hypoxemia and rescue maneuvers for refractory respiratory failure. Subjects covered in The Advanced Ventilator Book include:•Optimal PEEP•Treatment of severe bronchospasm•Prone positioning•Therapeutic neuromuscular blockade•Inhaled nitric oxide•Veno-Venous ECMO•The seven rules of severe respiratory failureDr. William Owens explains these complex concepts in a clear and readable manner. Like the original, this book is meant to be used in the ICU or Emergency Department instead of the library. The focus is on the bedside care of critically ill patients, as it should be.
